Divisidero delivers terrific late charge in American Turf, Race 6 on 2015 Kentucky Derby Day

A 20-1 overlay on the morning line for Saturday's American Turf (G2), Divisidero was accordingly bet down to 8-1, and performed like the best horse in the race when exploding from far off a moderate pace to win going away. His fans were rewarded with a $19.20 win mutuel.

The well-bred son of Kitten's Joy and the Lemon Drop Kid mare Madame du Lac was making only his third career start for trainer Buff Bradley of Brass Hat and Groupie Doll fame. He uncorked a similarly eye-catching rally to win at first asking at Gulfstream, and missed by only three-quarters of a length next time in the Palm Beach (G3) despite a tough trip.

With Rafael Hernandez back aboard, Divisidero was anchored near the rear through splits of :24, :48 3/5 and 1:12 2/5. He still had a lot of ground to make up as A Lot, an early stalker, appeared to make the winning move in the stretch. But Divisidero showed a terrific turn of foot to erase the deficit and blow past A Lot in a final time of 1:41 2/5 for 1 1/16 miles on the firm turf.

Luck of the Kitten didn't fire in fourth. One of the few Ramsey horses still running after several scratches, topped by International Star in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Stephanie's Kitten in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1), he had looked the speed of the speed on paper. Instead, Luck of the Kitten tracked Tuba and didn't pick up from there.

World Approval, the less fancied of Mark Casse's pair, passed Luck of the Kitten late to grab third. Stablemate Conquest Typhoon, the 3-1 favorite, never landed a blow.
