Meydan Race 6 Wagers

  • $30 win: #1 Starlust
  • $2 trifecta: 1 with 3, 4, 5, 8 with 3, 4, 5, 8

Starlust, third behind Big Evs in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita in November, ran nicely first-up this year when second by a length to the filly Star of Mystery in the Al Wasl Stakes at Meydan Jan. 12.

That form was made to look better when Star of Mystery reappeared two weeks later and beat older horses in the Blue Point Sprint (G2), outfinishing some very good performers.

Starlust won’t have Star of Mystery to attend to this week, and if he repeats his Al Wasl Stakes effort, he will be extremely hard to topple.

The best betting options may be to consider exotics with Starlust as a banker.

Of the five horses that reoppose Starlust from the Al Wasl, the most obvious horses to fill the minor placings are #8 Seven Questions and #5 Great Truth. Seven Questions was third in the Al Wasl and then took on Star of Mystery again in the Blue Point, finishing seventh. He should run well provided he backs up well enough in his third race in five weeks.

Great Truth had his chance when fourth in the Al Wasl. Starlust and Seven Questions had plenty in hand on him that day, though he may improve with the run.

Of those that didn’t run in the Al Wasl, #4 Chandigah looks the best prospect. He’s still a maiden but he was good enough to run third in the Round Tower Stakes (G3) at the Curragh last season and was beaten by the four-year-old Al Arbed when resuming at Meydan Jan. 19.

#3 Bombay Bazaar, a two-time winner in England last year, is also worth thinking about in exotics.
