Ellis Park: Horses to play in the $1,003 Super High 5 carryover

July 27th, 2024

If you feel like betting a Super High 5 this Saturday, check out Race 1 at Ellis Park. The weekend opener features a non-jackpot $1,003 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.

Winning a share won’t be easy. Race 1 is a maiden special weight for two-year-old fillies sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on turf. An overflow field of 14 (including four also-eligibles) has entered, and eight of them are first-time starters. Figuring out which of them will fire on debut—and which of the experienced runners will prove competitive—isn’t easy.

That said, a handful of fillies look appealing on paper. They include:

#2 Kilwin (9-2): An unraced daughter of Twirling Candy, who sires a solid 16% winners on turf, Kilwin was produced by the Blame mare Spanish Star, whose previous foals include the Grade 2-winning turf sprinter One Timer. One Timer won his first three starts (including two stakes) as a juvenile, so Kilwin has the pedigree to shine from an early age. She’s turned in sharp workouts at Keeneland (including a bullet half-mile in :47 2/5) and looks ready to record a top-five finish on debut.

#7 Aurelia’s Mischief (5-2): Aurelia’s Mischief didn’t show much in her debut sprinting five furlongs on dirt at Churchill Downs, finishing fifth by nearly a dozen lengths. But she had a troubled trip and is eligible to improve while switching to turf for trainer Brad Cox, a 28% winner with second-time starters. After all, Aurelia’s Mischief’s dam is Lady Aurelia, a top-tier turf sprinter who won the King’s Stand (G1) and Prix Morny (G1) during her decorated career.

#11 She’s All Charm (4-1): If She’s All Charm draws in off the also-eligible list, be sure to include her on your tickets. The daughter of More Than Ready has shown serious speed in the mornings at Turfway Park, working bullet half-miles from the starting gate in :46 4/5 and :46 3/5. Trainer Eoin Harty has already saddled one debut-winning juvenile at Ellis Park this meet, and that runner—First Resort—likewise entered off fast workouts at Turfway. Cementing She’s All Charm as a win threat is the fact her dam, Too Charming, won the Tropical Park Oaks on turf.

By emphasizing these three fillies in the Super High 5, we should have every chance to construct a winning ticket. Good luck!
