Evangeline Downs: Opening Day Pick 5 for April 6, 2022
It’s opening day at Evangeline Downs, and night time is the right time for these Louisiana-based horses coming in mostly from Fair Grounds, Delta Downs, and Sam Houston (more soon).
The Pick 5 begins with Race 4, 6:51pm CT post time.
Overall, the sequence could come up chalk heavy, but prices slip through as trainers aim for meets and can come out firing with longshots, so we’ll lay it out as such, leaning on chalk in our A selections, but cast a wide enough Bs and Cs net to gather the bombs.

Let’s fade Broberg’s coupled entry here; if one wins, we’ll pick up where we left in the Pick 4. Lone A: #5 Custom Kat (9-5) has been coming in second to tough foes, and last out lost to a stablemate who had the lead on a day where front runners won or outrun their odds through the first four races. Seems live after the Emile Schwandt claim.
Let’s work in three Bs since we are standing against the Broberg coupled entry. Aubrie Green exits a strong Fair Grounds meet and has two mounts for Kevin Williams. #4 Stand and Cheer (20-1) hasn’t raced in two years, but doesn’t need to run his best to beat these. #6 Shar’s Treasure (6-1) has been showing good run but has been caught wide the last two, this closer could enjoy a break from the Delta Downs bull ring. #7 Thunk (8-1) has been a horse for course at EVD and will appreciate a fast track after two muddy runs.
Race 5 dirt 6f MSW 23k 3yo
#4 Tapit to the Line (5-1) and #7 Hyperbolist (9-2) were up against it last out on LA Derby Day at Fair Grounds: Marsalis, Vinco and others. Now they’ll need to sort it out among themselves, along with #8 Eye Dee Kay (2-1) who failed the turf experiment last but faced Marsalis and Momentous on Risen Star Day.
For Bs: with the #1 Whiskey Gent we have a likely lone speed on the rail, #2 Quarter Rat (10-1) a second timer out for 23% trainer who lost rider in first, and #3 Too Much Crown (8-1) a KY-bred first time starter with solid dam win percentages. Let’s spread a little to get value here in case flattered company doesn't get our As everywhere.
Race 6 dirt 1 mile Clm 5 n2l 4yo and up, statebred fillies and mares
Sprint to route and a major class dropper from Broberg? I wouldn't blame you for singling #2 She’s My Priority (2-1) in here. Bet Broberg horses won’t get us paid, so if you’re looking for others, here’s my list.
Bs: I’d fade the #1 Crider Chase (5-2) if it wasn't for the recent near bullet workout. Should send from the rail. #6 St Maria (5-1), a Gomez-claim-back had an excuse sprinting last, now back to two turns. #8 Slide (15-1) returns to two turns where she has run her best. #10 Abigail G (20-1) was wide throughout but closed well last out at DD.
C: #7 Nin to Win (10-1) could be a turf horse but maybe just needs two turns, and she gets one of the best two-turn jocks up at EVD in Fusilier.
Race 7 dirt 6.5 OC 10k 4yo and up, fillies and mares
As: #4 Opps My Bad (3-1) can take it on the lead, 3rd off layoff. #5 Bar Tap (2-1) has the class, figures, and will be coming late with a strong kick.
C: #1A Memory Magic (5-1) had a trip excuse last out losing two lengths after steadying early. #2 Cave Creek (12-1) and #6 Green Monster (6-1) ran well in last, and with new trainers, could show more at a good price.
Race 8 dirt 6f MC 7500 3yo and up, statebred fillies and mares
A: #7 Citizen’s Reward (2-1) has raced nine times but never has looked so sharp in the mornings. I believe this filly will be stepping up.
