Exotics Plays for the 2022 Peter Pan Stakes
A well-matched field of eight sophomores will go 1 1/8 miles on the Belmont Park dirt in Saturday’s $200,000 Peter Pan S. (G3). The competitive one-turn contest lacks a standout and a case could be made for each runner in the field. I will focus my exotics wagers around a trio of contenders in the cast.
Conditioner Richard Mandella doesn’t ship horses in for a race of this nature in the Empire State very often, so I am very intrigued with #1 Set Sail. The LNJ Foxwoods homebred finished third in a seven-furlong tilt on the Santa Anita dirt on debut and showed marked improvement second time out, when he led throughout in a dominant score at one-mile.
The bay son of Malibu Moon has trained well in the interim, and he is bred to handle the distance. The Triple Crown-nominated colt has speed and the rail, and I love that Joel Rosario picks up the mount atop the smart prospect.
I was disappointed by the performance put in by #4 We The People in the Arkansas Derby (G1) last time out when never factoring, but I will give the Brisset pupil another chance in this spot. The Constitution colt was very impressive in his first pair of assignments, led by a powerful allowance victory two prior, and he is training well in advance of his second stakes attempt. I expect Flavien Prat to have him stalking a solid early pace from a few lengths back early on.
Chad Brown’s #2 Electability is two-for-two on the dirt this season with a pair of game victories to his credit. The Quality Road colt has good early presence, a positive form cycle, as well as the ability to improve with the added ground on Saturday. The $300,000 weanling purchase will track the pace from second or third in the early stages with top gun Irad Ortiz in the silks.
