Exotics Plays for the 2023 Lake Placid Stakes

August 17th, 2023

A total of 10 sophomores fillies, two of which are entered for main-track only purposes, will go postward in the $200,000 Lake Placid S. (G2) at Saratoga on Saturday. Conditioner Chad Brown has won four of the last six editions of the affair, and he looks well stocked for the event once again with four entered in the fantastic test.

Lake Placid Analysis

#7 Surge Capacity was a fairly convincing winner of the Lake George S. (G3) on the oval in her second career try and looms large right back in this endeavor. This Flintshire filly rolled home on debut at Monmouth Park and then handled the yielding going at Saratoga most recently en route to a stylish victory. The Klaravich homebred has posted a pair of useful morning drills in the interim, and she will be forwardly placed to some extent with Joel Rosario staying in the silks.

#5 Junipermarshmallow has done little wrong from a pair of lifetime showings for trainer Todd Pletcher and rates a chance in this deep field. By Quality Road, the filly made good at first asking in the fall at Keeneland and followed that up with a big closing run to take the Wait A While S. at Gulfstream Park in her 2022 finale. The St. Elias homebred might show some rust on Saturday, but she has been impressive to this stage of her development and wouldn’t be a surprise on this occasion. Jose Ortiz will be in the stirrups.

#4 Tax Implications, also from the Brown shedrow, has never finished worse than second from four lifetime races to date and is a key exotics piece. The chestnut daughter of Mehmas has improved her Brisnet Speed figure in every career showing and comes off of a solid runner-up finish in the Lake George (G3) on the course, as well. I expect the chestnut to appreciate the move to 1 1/16 miles and to be doing her best work inside the final furlong with Manny Franco taking the reins.

I could make a case for every contender in the field but will center my plays around the aforementioned trio.
