Exotics Wagers for the 2023 Prairie Bayou Stakes

December 15th, 2023

An overflow field of 14 will run 1 1/16 miles on the Turfway Park All-Weather surface in Saturday’s $100,000 Prairie Bayou S. I feel that recent Autumn S. (G2) romper #7 Wolfie’s Dynaghost (2-1) will be an imposing figure in the field with something close to his best performance for conditioner Jonathan Thomas, but in a field with this much depth, I feel compelled to take a chance at more value.

Prairie Bayou Exotics

  • $20 exacta 9 with 7 ($20)
  • $10 exacta 9 with 3,6 ($20)
  • $.50-cent trifecta 7,9 with 3,6,7,9 with 3,6,7,9 ($12)
  • $.20-cent superfecta 7,9 with 7,9 with 3,6 with all ($7.20)

#9 Cellist (8-1) rallied for a close second in the race last campaign and makes a second local run for Rusty Arnold as a major value play in the tilt. The five-year-old son of Big Blue Kitten was runner-up in the grassy Sycamore S. (G3) at Keeneland two prior, and the gelding is much better than he showed beneath the Twin Spires most recently when he finished near the back of the pack in the River City S. (G3). The Calumet homebred will have Martin Garcia in the controls.

Wolfie’s Dynaghost is a certain must use and has been in sharp form as of late. He is four-for-six lifetime on the All-Weather, including a perfect mark locally after he annexed the Kentucky Cup Classic S. easily on this surface in March. The Kentucky-bred son of Ghostzapper will be sent from the opening bell with Tyler Conner inheriting the mount.

#6 Runaway Storm (10-1) lacks the experience of many of his foes in the field, and the Grade 3 winner has also never raced on the synthetic, but he is very talented and I expect him to handle the surface with ease. The bay son of Midnight Storm is three-for-four since adding blinkers, with his lone setback coming in the Virginia Derby (G3) behind two standout performers. This Robert Hunt homebred will be involved from the break with Colby Hernandez in the stirrups.

#3 Temple (15-1) is a Grade 3 victor on the lawn who might thrive on the move to this course in his initial try on the synthetic in his career for Mike Maker. The seven-year-old gelding has displayed a big turn of foot going longer, and I could surely envision him passing a lot of runners in the lane with the cutback in distance on Saturday at a big price. Axel Concepcion will be in the stirrups aboard the live longshot.
