Exploring Pool 2 of the Breeders’ Cup Future Wager

The Breeders’ Cup kicked off future wagering for its event with pools on the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and Distaff (G1) last week, and this week bettors will get a chance to make the most of their two-year-old opinions with separate pools on the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and the sire of the winner.
What is the Breeders’ Cup Future Wager?
These Breeders’ Cup Future Wagers are conducted like the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, with 23 individual betting interests plus a field, i.e. “All Others,” as #24.
The final round of future wagering will be limited to 16 wagering interests. All pools are win only with a minimum bet of $2.
There will be no refunds should a horse not run in the Breeders’ Cup. However, if Churchill Downs and Breeders’ Cup Ltd. definitively determine, either prior to or during a pool, that an injury or other circumstance would prevent a wagering interest from participating in the Breeders’ Cup, wagering on that horse will be immediately suspended. No refunds will be issued for wagers on the suspended wagering interest.
Pool 2 opens noon (ET) on August 31 and concludes at 6:30 p.m. on September 2.

Playing the Breeders’ Cup Future Wager
So how should one wager on this weekend’s future action?
Many bettors might look to California-based horses, who had a three-race win streak in the Juvenile that ended with eventual champion Nyquist capturing the 2015 edition at Keeneland. However, the past two years’ horses raced at Saratoga before shipping west to win in 2016 (Classic Empire at Santa Anita Park) and 2017 (Good Magic at Del Mar).
The trend could shift back to the west this year with the top-two choices on the morning line being based on the West Coast.
Best Pal Stakes (G2) winner Instagrand (#8) was listed at 4-1 after another dominating performance in his initial try versus winners on August 11. Speedway Stable’s Roadster (#13) is the clear second choice at 6-1. These two colts are set for a showdown on Labor Day in the Del Mar Futurity (G1).
Game Winner (#6) (15-1), Gunmetal Gray (#7) (10-1), Rowayton (#14) (20-1) and Tale of the Union (#18) (20-1) are all given solid chances as well by oddsmaker Mike Battaglia.
Like Roadster, Game Winner and Tale of the Union both dominated their competition on debut at one turn for two-time Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert.
Along with Instagrand, Rowayton and Gunmetal Gray make up a powerful trio for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. The “Dorf” has a serious chance at earning his first Juvenile victory.
The undefeated Jason Servis-conditioned Call Paul (#2) and impressive Saratoga maiden winner Mucho (#10) are listed as co-third choices at 8-1, with the well-bred Endorsed (#5), a son of Tapit, listed at 12-1.
Prior to the summer meets at Del Mar and Saratoga, a few Churchill Downs-based colts ran well on the same surface this year’s Juvenile will be competed over, stamping themselves as legitimate contenders. The Steve Asmussen-conditioned Nitrous (#12) (20-1) and Tight Ten (#19) (15-1), as well as the Mark Casse-trained Dream Maker (#4) (20-1) and Strike Silver (#17) (20-1) are worth consideration for those looking to get a bit more value than a few of the top choices are likely to offer.
With just a bit over two months until the Breeders’ Cup it is possible that someone could step up who is not amongst the 23 individual entries for the BCFW Pool 2 wager, but it is unlikely. The 30-1 price for “All Other Juveniles” is fair, but not something I am interested in getting involved with. Perhaps that will change after the Grade 1 events over Labor Day weekend in New York and California.

Endorsed (#5) ran down a well-meant Chad Brown colt in Ahead of Plan in his debut at Saratoga on August 18. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin is capable of winning with his stock at first asking, but generally his horses move forward after gaining a bit of experience. This son of Medaglia d’Oro appears to have a bright future ahead of him.
Dream Maker (#4) has not been seen since coming from well off the pace in his first start back on June 7 at Churchill. The fact he has not run at Saratoga for trainer Mark Casse is slightly concerning, but getting two turns should not be an issue at all for this John Oxley homebred.
