Fair Grounds: Betting With, and Against, Corona Bolt in the Sugar Bowl Stakes

December 23rd, 2022

A six-pack of juveniles will vie in Monday’s $100,000 Sugar Bowl S. at Fair Grounds. The six-furlong dash is led by the Brad Cox-conditioned #3 Corona Bolt (8-5), who was an impressive winner in his lone lifetime start to date.

Bred in the Sunshine State, the Bolt d’Oro colt was unveiled beneath the Twin Spires on Nov. 19 and held off a game rival en route to a one-length tally, and he was flattered when his main challenger came back to graduate in his subsequent appearance.

Corona Bolt has posted a trio of morning drills at this locale in the interim, and he will be an imposing foe if he shows improvement in his second lifetime tussle. The morning-line choice will have go-to pilot Florent Geroux in the silks once again, and the $225,000 weanling purchase will be tracking a lively pace from the opening bell in this heat.

#5 Toddchero (9-2) put forth a solid effort when an allowance third on the course in his most recent showing for conditioner Jayde Geiner. Purchased for $77,000 in the spring, the February foal has hit the board in four straight, the last trio coming in the stakes ranks, and the stalker might receive a good setup from off the pace on Monday while going off at a square price. Jareth Loveberry retains the mount atop the son of Bucchero.

Jose Camejo’s #6 Late September (7-2) is a dual stakes victor in the Cajun-bred ranks and will move to open company with Luis Saez in the controls. By Munnings, the colt has won from both on and off of the pace, and I expect him to navigate a clear voyage while breaking from the outside post slot. The bay makes a lot of sense in the field if he can duplicate his most recent effort.

Corona Bolt – With

  • $40 win #3 Corona Bolt ($40)
  • $5 trifecta key 3 with 5,6 ($10)

Corona Bolt – Against

  • $3 trifecta 5,6 with 3,5,6 with all ($48)
