Fair Grounds: How to bet the Silverbulletday Stakes

January 20th, 2022

A compact field of six three-year-old fillies will go postward in the $150,000 Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds on Saturday. The 2022 Road to the Kentucky Oaks qualifying race will reward the top four finishers with points on a 10-4-2-1 structure.

Silverbulletday Wagers

  • $30 win #4 Sweet as Pie ($30)
  • $10 trifecta key 4 with 1,5 ($20)

The Todd Pletcher-trained #4 Sweet as Pie was a sharp debut winner on October 8 at Belmont Park when rallying in the stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths in going-away fashion. By Tapit, the $490,000 yearling purchase returned in the Tempted S. on the same oval and came home an even fourth behind a nice cast of prospects. The Kentucky-bred has been freshened up since and looks to be sitting on a big effort in her second stakes assignment.

Sweet as Pie is from a fine female line and bred to run all day, so I fully expect the filly to thrive in her initial two-turn try on Saturday. She has some tactical speed combined with a nice turn of foot, and she should benefit from a good post draw after having been stuck on the rail in her first two outings. The gray lass is paired with pilot Florent Geroux for the first time in the affair, and I feel that the duo will be a perfect match for each other.

Al Stall’s #1 Fannie and Freddie just missed as my top pick when a narrow runner-up in the Untapable S. on the surface last time out. The Malibu Moon filly has shown vast improvement sincer going long in her last pair of assignments, and the $150,000 yearling buy will be forwardly placed throughout against this group. She will have Colby Hernandez riding once again.

#5 La Crete, a half-sister to 2021 Cotillion S. (G1) heroine Clairiere, left little doubt on debut when holding a clear lead throughout while going 1 1/16 miles beneath the Twin Spires. Conditioned by Steve Asmussen, the Stonestreet homebred didn’t run especially fast in her initial offering, but she was geared down late and the well-bred miss is surely eligible to improve with one under her belt. Joel Rosario retains the ride atop a fine prospect who could evolve into any type with additional seasoning.
