Fair Grounds Pick 6 for Feb. 12: $9,039 carryover and 15% takeout

February 12th, 2023

Sunday’s Pick 6 at Fair Grounds is bettable to say the least: 15% takeout, $9,039 carryover, plus every race is an open-company affair, so all you “La-bredheads” might want to sit this sequence out.

I’m singling in the legs where my confidence is highest, so I can include more runners in the races I don’t see as clearly. Enough strategy. Let’s attack this $9,039 carryover pool.

$1 base bet in Pick 6 = $60

Race 3, 6 Furlongs, Clm 40000(40-30)B, 4-year-olds & up

#2 Vale (5-1) ran huge last out, finally putting his talent on display for trainer Grant Forster, who has been hot the past few weeks. Vale’s figure and form pattern suggests he’ll be just as good if not better in this one, and other bettors will shy away because of the class hike.

Race 4, 1 1/16 Miles, Md 50000, 3-year-olds

#1 Soft Pants (7-2) has a few excuses and a nice form pattern to boot. Last race he faced a glacial pace; race prior, he encountered serious trouble out of the gate. #5 Green Beans (9-2) has commanding speed and the right to improve. #8 Julia’s Warrior (7-2) went five wide, checked behind, but galloped out best in his last race when finishing second to game Dallas Stewart first-timer. Likely to step forward.

Race 5, 6 Furlongs, OC 50k/N2X, 4-year-olds & up

#3 Sutherland (2-1) is cutting back in distance for the master of distance changes, Bret Calhoun. This runner has been looking sharp for a while, and I see another big one coming. Single.

Race 6, 1 Mile 70 Yards, OC 17k/N1X, 4-year-olds & up, fillies and mares

No, #1 H.T. Xena’s (8-1) figures don’t fit against these, but Matt Shirer knows when to stretch them out and when Xena has run long in the past, she’s come off the pace, which could be exactly where a runner wants to be against this front-running field. Ditto in terms of the strong trainer angle and pace set-up for #2 Zing (8-1). #3 Mytown Myrules (7-2) was super impressive on debut, but against only three foes. Still, impressive enough, and the Tom Amoss barn is winning 32%. It’s been a bit since the Norm Casse runner #4 Not So Close (6-1) has raced, but the works suggest she’s ready to run back to that effort. #6 Non Violence (2-1) is going two turns for the second time and gets a little more rest for this effort.

Race 7, Turf, About 1 1/8 Miles, OC 50k/N2X, 4-year-olds & up

#2 Burning Bright (10-1) runs well fresh, so if the form is still there, this would be the time to take him. As long as he doesn’t get caught up in a battle near the front, #6 Monition (3-1) looks to be the one to beat. But… there’s a lot of speed signed on. #7 Rising Empire (7-2) had all sorts of trouble in his last race and proved in the gallop-out that this distance will be just fine. #9 Freedom’s Way (5-1) freaked last out in the slop. The Eddie Kenneally barn doesn’t have strong numbers for second off layoff, but if this is this runner’s new form, we must respect.

Race 8, 1 Mile 70 Yards, Clm 5000N3X, 4-year-olds & up

In his last race #9 Stockpiler (3-1) showed yet again that he is a runner. Overcoming trouble, he still had enough energy to put his late kick on display. He should have pace to run at today, and my eyes will be big with the will-pays as he flies home.
