Fair Grounds: Usual Suspects at Top of Trainer Standings
Every Fair Grounds Meet, certain trainers end up at the top of the standings. The current Fair Grounds Meet is no exception. Brad H. Cox leads the pack followed by Joe Sharp, Albert Stall, Michael Stidham, and Tom Amoss.

Brad H. Cox - Green Mask, 2017 Grade 2 Highlander Stakes
Cox has had a bang up 2017. He's got 203 winners from 776 starters. That's a nice 26% win percentage. So far, all of Cox's mounts have earned over a combined $8.819 million. Cox's Fair Grounds' meet has been exceptional. He's garnered 18 winners from 56 starters. He's got 4 second place finishers. He's got 11 third place finishers.
Cox's top horse based on earnings is Carve. I've listed Green Mask's Grade 2 Highlander Stakes win here. Cox also has trained Cash Control, Benner Island, Arklow, Chocolate Ride, and Call Pat to graded wins.
Joe Sharp - Girvin, 2017 Grade 1 Haskell Invitational
Trainer Joe Sharp really burst onto the scene in 2017. Sharp, who's married to former jockey Rosie Napravnik, won three important 3-year-old graded races this year with Girvin. Girvin took home the Risen Star Stakes and the Louisiana Derby. Under Sharp's training, he also upset Timeline, Battle of Midway, McCraken, Irish War Cry, and Practical Joke in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth.
Joe Sharp's won 16 races, has 9 places, and 10 thirds at the current Fair Grounds Meet. He projects to have an exceptional 2018.
Albert M. Stall, Jr. - Departing, 2013 Grade 2 Super Derby
What horseplayers haven't heard the name Albert Stall? Not that many, I'm sure. Although I've posted Departing's 2013 Super Derby win onto this blog, Albert M. Stall Jr. has trained some amazingly accomplished horses. At the current Fair Grounds Meet, Stall has 14 winners from 59 starters. He's got 12 second place, and 5 third place finishers.
Stall trained Blame to a Breeders' Cup Classic upset win over Zenyatta. He also trained Star Guitar, the legendary Louisiana bred. Stall's been one of the best trainers in the United States for years.
Michael Stidham - Zipessa, 2017 Grade 1 First Lady Stakes
Michael Stidham has trained some decent horses including Istanford, Her Emmynency, Workin For Hops, and Wilcox Inn. I've added Zipessa's win in the 2017 First Lady Stakes to this list. Zipessa went off at over 16 to 1 to win the First Lady Stakes. She finished 11th in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
Stidham has won 12 races from 45 starters at the current Fair Grounds Meet. We'll see how he does in 2018. My guess, is that he builds on the fantastic 2017.
Thomas M. Amoss - Rise Up, 2013 Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot
The great Tom Amoss has won numerous graded stakes races. I've added his victory with Rise Up in the 2013 Delta Downs Jackpot. He also won the Grade 1 Apple Blossom with Heritage of Gold. Rush Bay is a Grade 2 winner. The popular Mo Tom won the LeComte Stakes.
At the Fair Grounds, Amoss has 11 wins, 10 second place, and 4 third place finishes from 44 starters as of Dec. 30. Don't be surprised if Amoss ends up taking the trainer title.
