Famous firsts in Kentucky Derby history
You would think that after 146 years the Kentucky Derby would no longer be doing anything for the first time, but 2020 has been a year unlike any other. Not only will the "Run for the Roses" take place in September for the first time ever, but it will also unfold with zero spectators in the stands. Such is life in the throes of a pandemic.
Although this year's Derby may look and sound a little different than years past, it will still evoke memories of the many historic firsts that have taken place at Churchill Downs since its inception. Who could forget when Regret became the first filly to win "the fastest two minutes in sports", or when groundbreaking jockey Diane Crump became the first female to ride in the Kentucky Derby?
