Frosh-Trot Favorite Partners With Our 69-1 Choice For $246 Exacta In Fall-Final-Four Elim; Public Nabs Elims; $31 Winner Tops Prices

More late-season public favorites dominate in the remaining stakes but we managed to squeeze some exotic money from a Fall Final Four elim. At the Meadowlands on Nov. 18, three top favorites and on second choice led the elimination wins. However, one of our choices was super and surprised all exotic bettors.

In The Valley Victory elim, the majority supported Fourth Dimension and ignored our choice, which finished just behind him at 69-1. Kinda Lucky Lindy ($29.40, $12.60), completed an exacta worth $246.20.

In the other frosh elims we were fourth twice. We had Reign On Me (7-1) in the Three Diamonds and Smoke And Mirrors (21-1) in the Goldsmith Maid. The Governor’s Cup produced a very dull effort from Captain Deo (99-1).

Our Partners For Picks (PFP) attempt this week, a Pick 5 at Plainridge on Nov. 17, not only didn’t end well, it began and continued poorly. A 14-1 shot won the first leg and contender, Conkers Conquest (6-1) finished sixth, which started a trend for our suggestions. In the second and fifth leg, two others we chose finished sixth and both lost to a second or third public choice: Itsabouttime (41-1) and Our Cullenscrown (65-1). In leg three we finished fifth with Dontmeswiththebest (11-1). Our leg-4 horse, Rock My Life, scratched; the second public choice won.

Thursdays quartet of Matron finals for sophomores at Dover were won by second-and-third public choices. We offered two thirds: Top Flight Angel ($7.20) and Tequila Monday ($6.80). In the remaining two finals were were eighth with Cool Cates (41-1) and seventh with Boogie Shuffle (150-1). Those two odds are not typos.


H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 50 active horses (a 20-percent win hit rate and a 42-percent ATB [across-the-board] hit rate).

NOTE: We apologize for three H2W horses listed at Rosecroft on Nov. 18. The Maryland-bred races were non-betting events. Funnier than the mistake of posting them is the fact that two of the three horses (I Run This Show, Makin Money Fast) won.

News & Notes

Late Closers will be offered as part of the 2018 winter meet at Hawthorne Race Course. Racing kicks off with a three-night week on Friday, Jan. 5,  and conclude with a special Monday card on Feb. 19. There will be no racing on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 4). That card will be moved back to Monday (Feb. 5). Racing otherwise offers a four-night-a-week schedule with post time Thursday through Sunday at 7:10 p.m. (Central). The first qualifiers are on Wednesday (Jan 10).

Guy Gagnon drove five winners again, this time on Rideau-Carleton’s Nov. 17 program and this time five in a row. Gagnon drove nine races on the program, costing a bettor $18.00 to wager upon all of horses he drove. His five winners were heavily bet, returning merely $19.90 and rewarding followers only $1.90 in profit.

On Nov. 14, Jason Bartlett won five of a dozen races at Yonkers and became a high-powered flat-bet profit maker for those wagering on his horses. It cost devoted bettors $24.00 to wager on his drives on that program. For that investment, his followers collected a return of $106.70, resulting in a stupendous 400-plus-percent return. The windfall came by the virtue of a $57.00 and a $30.00 winner among the quintet.

Also on Nov. 14, Corey Callahan-driven horses won five of 12 races on the Dover program. The $24.00 invested in his efforts resulted in a profit due to a winner paying $20.80, while the other four were public choices. The entire return for following Cory’s drives for no other reason than he drove was $35.60.

New faces bringing new stock to Cal-Expo’s current meet are horsemen who raced in Alberta this year. Relocating to Sacramento for the meet are Quentin Schneider, Richard Remillard, Ryan Grundy, Gary Clark, Rene Goulet and Gord Empey. Gary Clark already has already recorded a win with one of his horses in the opening race on Nov. 10. Grundy has won with two. Goulet scored one on the Nov. 11 program. There have been conversations involving officials from California, Fraser Downs in British Columbia (BC) and Alberta’s standardbred brass about creating a series that would start in California, continue in BC and wind up in Alberta. The past couple of years a handful of California horsemen have come to the Alberta yearling sale to buy horses.
