Golden Gate Fields: How to bet the $5,670 Super High 5 carryover

November 19th, 2022

$5,670. That’s not an insignificant amount by any means, and it just happens to be the size of the Super High 5 carryover up for grabs on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

The $1 wager is available to play in any race featuring seven or more starters. On Saturday, the first suitable race (and the race in which the carryover is available) is Race 3, a straightforward maiden special weight for fillies and mare sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta.

Precisely seven horses have been entered, and among the local runners, #4 Tamantari (5-2) is a standout. The three-year-old filly is a daughter of Tamarando, who showed an affinity for the Golden Gate Tapeta when capturing the 2014 El Camino Real Derby (G3).

Tamantari has likewise run well at Golden Gate, finishing second in three consecutive maiden special weights over this Tapeta track. But with five runner-up finishes from six lifetime starts, Tamantari has shown a tendency to settle for second place rather than battle for victory.

What if we try to beat Tamantari with #2 Princess Adaleigh (9-5), the morning line favorite? Princess Adaleigh is shipping north from Del Mar, where she finished second and fourth in her first two starts against maiden special weight competition on dirt. Along the way, Princess Adaleigh posted Brisnet Speed ratings of 83 and 87; the 87 is the highest figure in Saturday’s field, and the 83 is tied for the second-highest rating.

Switching to all-weather is an obvious question mark for Princess Adaleigh, but sire Goldencents was good enough to win the 2014 Pat O’Brien (G2) on synthetic, so that’s an encouraging sign. In any case, the subtle drop in class while traveling from Del Mar to Golden Gate may be enough to send Princess Adaleigh to the winner’s circle.

Beyond the two favorites, #5 Two Twelve (6-1) seems like a reliable filly to include. Her first two starts sprinting over the Golden Gate Tapeta have yielded third- and fourth-place finishes. On both occasions, Two Twelve finished behind Tamantari. Turning the tables will be tricky, but Two Twelve is certainly capable of finishing in the top five.

Here’s how we’ll bet the Super High 5:

  • $1 Super High 5: 2 with 4 with 5 with 1,3,6,7 with 1,3,6,7 ($12)
  • $1 Super High 5: 2 with 4 with 1,3,6,7 with 5 with 1,3,6,7 ($12)
  • $1 Super High 5: 2 with 4 with 1,3,6,7 with 1,3,6,7 with 5 ($12)
    Total: $36

Good luck!
