Golden Gate: How to bet the $3,079 Super High 5 carryover
The final race on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields saw 36-1 longshot Sunset Paynter take home top honors, triggering a $3,079 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.
If you’re wondering when the prize pool will be dispersed, we’ve got you covered. The carryover is on the table in Sunday’s seventh race at Golden Gate, a $10,000 claimer taking place over six furlongs on Tapeta. With eight horses in the entries, there are only 6,720 possible Super High 5 outcomes, not an unmanageable number by any means.
The key to handicapping Race 7 is deciding how to play #3 Satanta (6-1), #5 Grit and Curiosity (9-5), #8 Our Expectation (4-1), and #7 Handsome Gary (9-2), who crossed the wire first, third, fourth, and fifth in a 5 1/2-furlong dash over this track and class level on Jan. 8. Only two lengths separated those four horses, and the race unfolded with a crowded homestretch drive that compromised Grit and Curiosity, Our Expectation, and Handsome Gary, so determining which will finish best on Sunday is difficult.
Rather than split hairs, we’ll think outside the box and play longshot #6 R M C Hook’em (10-1) on top. The six-year-old gelding hasn’t run since May 2022, when he dueled for the lead and finished fourth (beaten only 2 3/4 lengths) in a $16,000 claimer sprinting six furlongs at Golden Gate.
R M C Hook’em had previously competed in a bevy of stakes and allowances at Golden Gate. He kicked off 2022 with a pacesetting victory in a six-furlong allowance, and his first five runs of the year produced excellent Brisnet Speed ratings of 85, 82, 86, 83, and 89. For comparison, Satanta hasn’t posted a figure higher than 82 in his last 10 starts.
R M C Hook’em has put together a solid work tab in preparation for his return and figures to fire a competitive shot while dropping in class. He has every chance to spring a surprise.
The rest of the Super High 5 should be pretty straightforward to assemble:
- $1 Super High 5: 6 with 3,5 with 3,5,7,8 with 3,5,7,8 with ALL ($48)
Good luck!
