Golden Horn among 11 remaining in King George

The undefeated Golden Horn is the marquee name among 11 horses remaining for Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. (G1) at Ascot. The three-year-old colt, trained by John Gosden, will be seeking a rare triple in the 1 1/2-mile weight-for-age contest, the most prestigious on the English racing calendar.

Winner of the Epsom Derby (G1) and Eclipse S. (G1), the latter over older rivals, Golden Horn is seeking to become only the fourth horse in history to win those two races and the King George. Tulyar (1952), Mill Reef (1971), and Nashwan (1989) were the others to complete the sweep.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Snow Sky was supplemented to the King George on Monday for £75,000. He posted an upset victory over course and distance at last month's Royal meeting in the Hardwicke S. (G2).

Gosden has other King George entries. Romsdal, who placed in the Derby and St Leger (G1) last year, was most recently fourth to Snow Sky in the May 15 Yorkshire Cup (G2), while Eagle Top was a rough-trip second in the Hardwicke last time.

Also exiting the Hardwicke is Postponed, third behind Snow Sky and Eagle Top, and the Stoute-trained Telescope, who finished sixth in his title defense of that fixture.

The foreign contingent is led by the Andre Fabre-trained Flintshire, a two-time Group 1 winner who has made a habit of coming up short in many of the world's most prestigious events. Runner-up last year in the Coronation Cup (G1), Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1), and Breeders' Cup Turf (G1), he's settled for minor awards this season in the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1), Coronation Cup, and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (G1).

Dylan Mouth seeks to become the first Italian-based King George winner since the legendary Ribot in 1956. A winner in all of nine starts in Italy, including a five-length demolition of the Gran Premio di Milano (G1) June 7, the colt suffered his only defeat at Ascot last year when a distant eighth to Eagle Top in the King Edward VII S. (G2).

Also remaining in the King George are British Champions Fillies and Mares S. (G1) winner Madame Chiang, Oromonde S. (G3) winner Clever Cookie, and The Corsican.

Final declarations for the £1,215,000 event are due Thursday morning.
