Gulfstream: Betting the mandatory-payout $520,102 Rainbow Pick 6 carryover

June 22nd, 2024

A $520,102 jackpot carryover in Gulfstream Park’s 20-cent Rainbow Pick 6 is slated for a mandatory payout on Saturday. The final pool is projected to exceed $4 million.

The Pick 6 gets underway in Race 8 at 4:26 p.m. ET. Here’s how we’ll play the six races.

Race 8: $35,000 Maiden Claiming (seven furlongs on dirt)

The opening leg looks fairly straightforward. #3 Bigbouquetofroses (5-2) has hit the board multiple times against Florida-bred maiden special weight competition and should enjoy dropping in class for David Fawkes, a 33% winner with horses entering the maiden claiming ranks for the first time. #10 Sarah’s Dream (8-1) could outrun expectations while shipping from Kentucky to Florida and adding Lasix in her first start for trainer Jose D’Angelo, a 23% winner with horses racing under his care for the first time. And we’ll include first-time starter #1 R Disaster (2-1), whose trainer—Saffie Joseph Jr.—wins 24% of the time with horses debuting in maiden claimers.

Race 9: $8,000 Claiming (5 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta)

#3 Awesome Wind (3-1) ran second in a five-furlong sprint over this track and class level on June 1, so he’s a logical contender for high-percentage trainer Carlos David. But the class-dropping duo of #9 Breezer (8-1) and #10 Banneker (5-2) are arguably stronger contenders; Banneker in particular appeals after finishing third in a $16,000 claimer over this track and distance on June 6.

Race 10: $6,250 Claiming (one mile on dirt)

#2 Boldness (5-2) brings sharp Brisnet Speed ratings to the table and has finished first and third in his last two starts over this track, distance, and class level. He’s a compelling contender, but so is #5 Holiday Fantasy (8-5), who beat Boldness by a head when finishing second in a contest like this one on June 1. We’d best include them both.

Race 11: $16,000 Claiming (1 1/16 miles on Tapeta)

You can make a case for many different contenders in this competitive claimer. We’ll aim to survive using only three: #1 Immense Faith (8-1), #5 Mr Brizel (9-5), and #7 Dontbesoogrouchy (8-1).

Race 12: $75,000 Handicap (one mile on dirt)

#4 Shaq Diesel (5-2) brings strong Brisnet Speed ratings to the fold and exits a third-place finish in the seven-furlong Big Drama H. at Gulfstream. He’s 2-for-3 racing one mile and should have every chance to win this $75,000 handicap, though #1 Black Belt (2-1) is fast enough to challenge on his best day, and 2023 Wood Memorial (G2) winner #7 Lord Miles (8-1) could win if he recaptures his back class in his second start of 2024.

Race 13: Powder Break S. (one mile and 70 yards on Tapeta)

#11 Angel Nadeshiko (5-1) won the Robert J. Frankel (G3) over the Santa Anita turf in December. She’s never run on Tapeta, but if she handles the switch, her class can win the day for the red-hot jockey/trainer duo of Drayden Van Dyke and Saffie Joseph Jr. However, we’ll also use #2 Batucada (4-1), #8 Jan’s Girl (7-2), and #10 Chick’s Shadow (15-1), just in case Angel Nadeshiko struggles with Tapeta.

Pick 6 Wager:

  • 20-cent Pick 6: 1,3,10 with 3,9,10 with 2,5 with 1,5,7 with 1,4,7 with 2,8,10,11 ($129.60)

Good luck!
