Gulfstream: How to bet the $2,872 Super High 5 carryover

October 29th, 2023

If you’re thinking, “I’m in the mood to close out the weekend chasing a non-jackpot Super High 5 carryover,” then you’re in luck. Gulfstream Park is ready to oblige with a $2,872 carryover in their $1 Super High 5.

The prize pool is up for grabs in Race 1, a $12,500 maiden claimer for fillies and mares sprinting seven furlongs on dirt. With eight horses in the entries, there are 6,720 possible Super High 5 outcomes, a manageable number.

Let’s take a horse-by-horse look at the entries:

#1 Black and Silver (30-1): Soundly beaten in both starts to date, including a $12,500 maiden claimer. Needs improvement to challenge for a top-five finish.

#2 Starship Sigrun (3-1): Hasn’t challenged in four starts against tougher company on Tapeta and turf, but has the pedigree to relish dirt and should appreciate dropping down the class ladder. A strong contender while picking up apprentice jockey Jon Rivera, who rides with a seven-pound weight allowance.

#3 Novellie (5-2): Finished a good third in a $12,500 maiden claimer sprinting six furlongs last time out. Three-year-old filly brings strong Brisnet Speed ratings to the table for hot trainer Saffie Joseph and can’t be dismissed from win consideration.

#4 For the Thrill (10-1): Nabbed the runner-up spot in a 6 1/2-furlong $12,500 maiden claimer last time out and has the tactical speed to sit a favorable trip in this largely paceless field. Maybe not a win threat, but certainly a top-five contender.

#5 Show Me Love (30-1): Has missed the board in six consecutive $12,500 maiden claimers and needs improvement to challenge for more than a minor award.

#6 My First Date (6-1): Runner-up in a $10,000 maiden claimer when last seen. Has yet to race shorter than one mile, but fired her best effort in a one-turn race. Needs stronger Brisnet Speed ratings, but may enjoy cutting back in distance.

#7 Sharp Pippa (4-1): Rallied to finish second in each of her last two starts against $12,500 maiden claiming competition at Gulfstream Park. Hasn’t missed the top five in six dirt starts and is a must-use in the Super High 5.

#8 A J’s Memory (7-2): Has struggled lately on turf and synthetic, but her last dirt start produced a runner-up finish in a $35,000 maiden claimer sprinting seven furlongs against three-year-olds at Gulfstream. Could fire a strong shot while returning to dirt under apprentice jockey Angel Morales, who rides with a five-pound weight allowance.
