Gulfstream: How to bet the 2023 Carry Back Stakes
A total of seven sophomores will travel seven-eighths on the Gulfstream Park dirt in Saturday’s $75,0900 Carry Back S. The Jorge Delgado-trained #7 Super Chow is the class of the field and rates as the one to beat as he comes in with a 4-3-1-0 local line. A multiple stakes winner on the course, the son of Lord Nelson ran into a buzzsaw last time out at Pimlico when ultimately crossing the wire in fifth in the Chick Lang S. (G3), but he will bounce back on Saturday.
Carry Back Wagers
- $10 trifecta 7 with 1 with 2,5 ($20)
- $5 superfecta 1,7 with 1,7 with 2,5 with 2,5 ($20)
- $2 superfecta key 7 with 1,2,5 ($12)
The $75,000 juvenile purchase is as swift as any horse in the field from the gate, but with an advantageous outside post slot to break from, the Kentucky-bred will give pilot Emiseal Jaramillo options early on. Dark bay colt shows a trio of useful morning moves in advance of this dash and the race surely goes through him.
Terra Pompay’s #1 Khozeiress has never run a bad one in his lifetime and will benefit most if the favorite fails to fire in this tilt. This bay son of Khozan has gate speed combined with a nice turn of foot, and figures to sit a perfect trip tucked in behind a contested early tempo to the top of the lane. A winner in his lone effort at the distance, the colt has been quick in his last pair of morning moves and rates an obvious chance while making his stakes debut. Leo Reyes will be in the stirrups.
For the lower rungs of the exotics, I will focus some on recent maiden romper #5 Mr. Peeks and Sophomore S. victor #2 Zydeceaux. The former has been headstrong to this stage of his development, but the talent is there and I feel that he will be dangerous as he begins to put it all together. Edgar Perez retains the ride aboard Mr. Peeks, who might clear the field early.
Zydeceaux is a multiple stakes winner who has earned three of his four career victories at the trip. Trained by Ramon Minguet, the Cajun Breeze gelding has pace and is a stubborn bay who has never finished out of the money in one-turn races. If the Florida bred can avoid a duel in the early stages, then he rates as a major threat with Morelos in the silks.
