Gulfstream: How to bet the $4,553 Super High 5 carryover

The $1 Super High 5 went unsolved on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, which means the Sunday card features a $4,553 Super High 5 carryover.

Winning a share requires deciphering Race 10 (post time 5:50 p.m. ET), a $16,000 claimer for fillies and mares racing one mile on turf. It features a tricky field with 10 entrants and 30,240 possible outcomes.

That said, the morning line favorites loom as logical contenders. #4 House of Melody (5-2) hasn’t run a bad race from three turf starts. After finishing second in a $25,000 maiden claimer racing one mile over the Gulfstream turf, House of Melody graduated by 1 1/2 lengths in a similar contest sprinting 7 1/2 furlongs. She subsequently misfired when trying Tapeta in a $16,000 starter optional claimer, but bounced back in her most recent start to wire a $16,000 claimer racing 1 1/16 miles over the Gulfstream grass.

House of Melody may be favored in part because she has the ultra-hot jockey/trainer duo of Edgard Zayas and Saffie Joseph Jr. in her corner; over the last two months, they’ve won at a 47% rate teaming up together, and that’s from a large sample size of 70 races. But there’s also a chance #3 Musical Romance (3-1) could start as the favorite since she’s run faster on the Brisnet Speed rating scale than House of Melody.

On four occasions since returning from a layoff in December, Musical Romance has started in $25,000 maiden claimers over the Gulfstream grass, finishing fourth, second, seventh, and fifth with Brisnet Speed ratings of 77, 80, 63, and 78. Those are significant numbers since House of Melody has yet to post a number higher than 75.

We’d be tempted to side with Musical Romance except for one factor, and that’s jockey assignments. Like House of Melody, Musical Romance is trained by Joseph. Both runners were ridden in their most recent start by Zayas, so the fact Zayas is named to ride House of Melody tips the scales toward House of Melody as the most likely winner on Sunday

We recommend keying House of Melody on top in the Super High 5 while counting on Musical Romance to finish in the top three.
