Gulfstream: How to bet the $8,705 Super High 5 carryover
$8,705. That’s the size of the Super High 5 carryover up for grabs in Sunday’s first race at Gulfstream Park.
Care to try your hand at winning a share? You had best come prepared for a challenge. The opening race happens to be a $25,000 maiden claimer for two-year-old fillies sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs, and the field is overflowing with 14 entries—12 in the main body of the field plus two also-eligibles. Assuming a dozen runners enter the gate (which seems like a certainty), there are 95,040 possible outcomes to consider.
We’ll take a shot supporting the first-time starter #2 Astonishing Anabel (8-1). She’s a bit of a price on the morning line, but what’s not to like? High-percentage trainer Jorge Delgado wins at a 28% rate with horses debuting in maiden claimers, and Delgado has gone 6-for-17 (35%) debuting juveniles over the Gulfstream dirt since 2021. Astonishing Anabel has shown flashes of speed in the mornings, and sire Practical Joke is responsible for 19% winners from first-time starters, so Astonishing Anabel looks ready to challenge on debut.
Can a horse's sire indicate which race conditions he or she will relish?@J_Keelerman certainly thinks so!

#5 Black Belt Barbie (4-1) and #6 Krazykatkousin (7-2), second and third in a five-furlong dash over this track and class level last month, are logical contenders for the minor awards. So too is #3 Le Boiana (9-2), who is dropping in class after finishing fourth in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park.
But if you want to get creative and include a longshot on your tickets, why not consider the second Delgado trainee, #8 Ginrin (15-1)? She showed little in her debut against maiden special weight company at Gulfstream last month, finishing seventh by a wide margin. But now Ginrin is dropping in class, adding blinkers, and picking up apprentice jockey Ailsa Morrison, who rides with a seven-pound weight allowance. Also noteworthy, Delgado has gone 11-for-31 (35%) saddling experienced juveniles over the Gulfstream dirt since 2021.
