Gulfstream Park: How to bet the $6,903 Super High 5 carryover

December 24th, 2023

Feel like chasing a Super High 5 carryover? Then check out the Sunday card at Gulfstream Park, which features a Super High 5 prize pool worth $6,903.

The carryover is up for grabs right off the bat in Race 1 (post time 12:10 p.m. ET), a maiden special weight for two-year-olds sprinting five furlongs on Tapeta. The eight-horse field features four experienced runners and four first-time starters, so it’s a tricky handicapping challenge.

Let’s take a horse-by-horse look at the field:

#1 Tie Breaker Lennie (30-1): Stoutly bred son of Lookin At Lucky is bred to shine running much farther than five furlongs, and trainer Dale Romans has gone only 2-for-29 (7%) saddling first-time starters at Gulfstream over the last five years.

#2 Last Post (30-1): Hasn’t shown much in two starts running long on turf at Laurel Park, finishing 10th and 11th. He’ll need to step forward while switching to Tapeta and cutting back in distance.

#3 Film Academy (5-2): Finished third in his debut sprinting against New York-breds on turf at Saratoga, earning an 81 Brisnet Speed rating that tops Sunday’s field. Trainer Mark Casse has gone 19-for-87 (22%) with two-year-olds racing on Tapeta at Gulfstream, and Film Academy has been gelded since his debut, so the morning line favorite is a serious win threat under four-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey Irad Ortiz.

#4 Art and Design (9-2): First-time starter from the hot barn of James Toner has put together a sharp work tab, though it’s worth noting Toner has gone only 1-for-22 (5%) debuting juveniles at Gulfstream since 2018.

#5 Mackville (4-1): Dueled for the lead in his debut sprinting six furlongs over the Churchill Downs dirt, then weakened to finish sixth by 2 1/4 lengths. The speedy son of Speightster earned a 74 Brisnet Speed rating and is a logical contender in Sunday’s field.

#6 Who Said Go (3-1): Ships in from the United Kingdom after debuting with a fourth-place finish in the Sirenia (G3) over the synthetic track at Kempton. The third-place finisher returned to win a Group 2, so Who Said Go has the form lines to factor while dropping in class for his first U.S. start.

#7 Mekele (15-1): Decent workouts at Palm Meadows suggest this first-time starter has at least an outside chance to crack the Super High 5.

#8 Rapid Grey (7-2): The second Mark Casse trainee posted a 75 Brisnet Speed rating when third on debut in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Ellis Park. He’s trained well for his first start as a gelding and has every chance to land a top-three finish.
