Gulfstream Park: How to bet the $2,963 Super High 5 carryover

How would you like to chase a non-jackpot carryover while enjoying your lunch? Such an opportunity is on the table for Sunday at Gulfstream Park, where the opening race of the afternoon (post time 12:30 p.m. ET) features a $2,963 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.

Race 1 is a $25,000 maiden claimer for two-year-old fillies, and while winning a $1 Super High 5 is never easy, Sunday’s opportunity appears more straightforward than usual.

For starters, there are a couple of appealing experienced runners in the entries. #5 Krazykatkousin (5-2) ran third in her debut sprinting 4 1/2 furlongs against maiden special weight company at Gulfstream Park two months ago, earning a respectable 62 Brisnet Speed rating. Trainer Michael Yates wins at a solid 18% rate with second-time starters, and Krazykatkousin figures to factor while dropping down the class ladder.

#6 Black Belt Barbie (5-1) is also appealing. She earned a 62 Brisnet Speed rating when finishing fourth in a five-furlong maiden special weight at Gulfstream earlier this month, and trainer Jeremiah O’Dwyer strikes at a 25% rate with second-time starters.

But don’t count the unraced #8 Gemma’s Curls (7-2) out of the mix. Hot trainer Jorge Delgado wins at a 25% rate with horses debuting in maiden special weights, and Gemma’s Curls hails from a productive family, considering her dam (Awesome Thrill) has foaled seven winners from nine starters.

Gemma’s Curls has put together a solid work tab in preparation for her debut and will be ridden by apprentice jockey Jason Huayas, which means Gemma’s Curls will benefit from a 10-pound weight allowance. There’s a lot to like about the chances of this January foal, who may hold a maturity advantage over her somewhat younger rivals.

First-time starter #2 Wheelingndealing (4-1) has also assembled a respectable work tab for trainer Kelsey Danner, a 13% winner with horses debuting in maiden claimers. And if you want to support a live longshot, you might consider #3 Miss Grand Slam (8-1). She failed to factor when finishing sixth in her debut against maiden special weight company at Gulfstream, but that effort took place over the synthetic Tapeta track, and trainer Carlos David wins at a 32% rate with second-time starters. Perhaps switching to dirt can trigger a stronger showing.
