Gulfstream Park: How to bet the $4,568 Super High 5 carryover

If you’re still winding down from the excitement of the Kentucky Derby (G1) and feel like chasing a carryover to let off steam, check out the Sunday card at Gulfstream Park.

There’s a $4,568 Super High 5 carryover up for grabs in Race 1, a maiden special weight for fillies and mares racing one mile on turf. The eight-horse field is less than half the size of the Kentucky Derby field, but who’s to say a winning bet won’t yield an enticing return on investment?

The morning line favorite is #7 Starship Boeing (7-5), and her credentials are enticing. The four-year-old daughter of American Pharoah has unleashed sharp rallies to finish second in both of her starts this season. In a $40,000 maiden optional claimer, Starship Boeing gained 2 1/4 lengths in the final furlong to miss by one length. Then in a maiden special weight, she passed three horses in the final eighth to finish 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner.

Trainer Steven Dwoskin has won with 23% of his starters this year, and Starship Boeing owns decent Brisnet Speed ratings of 84 and 82, stamping her among the fastest fillies in this field. She has every chance to vie for victory on Sunday.

But Starship Boeing isn’t necessarily unbeatable. #5 Jan’s Girl (3-1) is a formidable rival. She’s hit the board in each of her last six starts, including two on turf. In the 1 1/16-mile Martha Washington S. over the Gulfstream lawn, Jan’s Girl tracked the early pace before closing some ground to finish third with an 86 Brisnet Speed rating.

Jan’s Girl hasn’t run since November, but she’s trained sharply for her return. On March 19, she breezed half a mile over the Palm Meadows turf course in :46 4/5, and on April 6, she clocked five furlongs over the same course in 1:00. Even an April 27 dirt work was sharp, with Jan’s Girl traveling half a mile in :47 3/5.
