Hanson: Spot Plays for Day 2 of Glorious Goodwood

The five-day Goodwood Festival, colloquially known as "Glorious Goodwood," runs from Tuesday through Saturday this week, with Group 1 features highlighting the first three days.

U.S. bettors should take note the first three days of the meet, like all five days of Royal Ascot in June, will be part of a World Pool. With millions of dollars in handle from around the world, the amount up for grabs will be extensive.

Here are a couple horses of interest on Day 2 of the meet Wednesday.

Oak Tree S. (G3) -- Race 2 (9:25 a.m. ET)

A field of 17 fillies and mares will travel seven furlongs here, and a potential breakthrough might come from #2 BOUNCE THE BLUES (8-1), who's won or placed in her last five starts against fillies and mares.

Bounce the Blues was a shade unlucky two back in a Group 3 at Lingfield, when her momentum was stalled briefly as she lacked running room when in tight between rivals. She wound up second, beaten three parts of a length, by German invader Axana.

Her first season of action in 2020 included a rallying third-place finish in the Sceptre (G3) at Doncaster, in which she was beaten a head for second by Althiqa. That filly should be familiar to American fans as the winner of the Just a Game (G1) and Diana (G1) in New York this summer.

Bounce the Blues has run some of her better races with Oisin Murphy up, and drawing post 10 might work in her favor.

Sussex S. (G1) -- Race 4 (10:35 a.m. ET)

This Breeders' Cup Challenge prep for the Mile (G1) lost some luster after the older Palace Pier was withdrawn due to illness, thus leaving the three-year-old #9 Poetic Flare as an early odds-on choice.

However, another member of the classic generation, the filly #11 SNOW LANTERN (5-1), is intriguing as the likely second choice. The daughter of two-time Sussex winner Frankel hasn't yet faced males, but has improved rapidly this year.

A solid second to #10 Alcohol Free in the Coronation (G1) on heavy ground, she turned the tables on that rival over a quicker surface in the Falmouth (G1) at Newmarket, which was also open to older fillies.

Although she presumably has a little to find to beat her male rivals, and with Jamie Spencer substituting for the suspended Sean Levey, Snow Lantern might do so while getting weight all around.
