Hanson: Spot Plays for Goodwood July 30
Goodwood will be the focus of British racing this week as the five-day "Glorious" meeting kicks off Tuesday.
I'll be providing plays on some of those cards while attempting to boost the English racing bankroll, which has fallen from its original starting point of $1,000 to $598. Each win play will be equal to 5% of the outstanding balance.
The opening day feature is the Goodwood Cup (G1), a race I'm hard-pressed to oppose odds-on favorite Kyprios. Instead, my attention will be on the two earlier Group offerings.
Race 2: Vintage (G2), 9:25 a.m. ET
#8 Wolf of Badenoch (12-1) was off a touch slow and showed some greenness in the latter stages of his debut at Doncaster in mid-June, but he eagerly advanced from the rear of the field and ultimately won like a colt who might prove rather useful.
How he'll handle this tricky, undulating course is anyone's guess, but he does pack some pedigree punch. By juvenile champion Pinatubo, who won this race five years ago, he's out of a half sister to the Irish Oaks (G1) winner Even So. Dr Devious, the 1991 Vintage and 1992 Epsom Derby (G1) winner, also hails from this family.
Not being overly impressed with those possessing prior stakes experience, Wolf of Badenoch is worth a look at the current prices, which on Monday afternoon was in the range of 8-1 to 9-1 in overseas markets.
Race 3: Lennox (G2), 10 a.m. ET
Two-time Lennox winner Kinross could be in trouble here if the progressive four-year-old #3 English Oak (3-1) fares as well here in his stakes debut as he has in recent handicaps.
Capable on various types of ground, English Oak easily bested a modest field by more than four lengths at Haydock two back and then stepped up in grade to decisively score in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot by more than three lengths while flattening 25 rivals.
With Lockinge (G1) upsetter Audience and perhaps Newmarket-loving Noble Dynasty providing an honest pace, English Oak can be along in the latter stages to make a solid showing.
