Harness Preview: Picks and Horses to Watch for Oct. 12-16

Selected features, stakes coverage, and the never-ending TwinSpires’ horses-to-watch list (H2W) share keys to success in exotics, win, place, and show payoffs. 

MOHAWK MILES

Each week, we highlight probable long shots from Mohawk Park in this features section. If they do not win at first crack, we add them to the H2W the following week as a bet-back while adding new possibilities to this Mohawk Miles section.

Thursday, Oct. 12

Race 3—Tymal Contessa; This Kadabra product showed lots of early lick in her qualifier. 

Race 6—Star Hairdresser; Evenly with more to give from Zeron. 

Race 10—Connor; Strong mile is a sign of improvement at 18-1.

Friday, Oct. 13

INDIANA-RAMA

Hoosier

Indiana Sires Stakes Super Finals for two- and three-year-olds ($250k) headline the program. Here are our betting contenders in each division.

Race 3 (3fT)—Picaboo Lady is bound to be an overlay considering the obvious streaking winners and that’s good. A decent price will surface. Her two Red Mile wins top this group.

Race 6 (2fP)—All JK is a top-of-the-line JK Endofanera filly that is always in the thick of the finish and here she is in a perfect spot to pick up live cover and finish like her sire used to finish, filled with pace to spare.

Race 9 (3fP)—Tell’s On A Roll is feeling better after a sick-scratch and she’s in a perfect-trip starting position that will allow her to blast mid- or late-stretch and beat the obvious favorite at a price. At least that is the ideal wagering plan.

Race 10 (3cT)—Helpfirstedition is the beaten favorite but still the sterling best of these and the 9 hole could add some value to backing him and if he’s all out nothing will stop him.

Saturday, Oct. 14

ILLINOIS CLASSICS

Hawthorne

An array of Illinois-conceived and foaled finals present the state’s best. Here are the contenders we support in the events we choose for wagering.

Race 5: Fox Valley Flan ($119k) 2fT—Illini Diva is the best of the Lou’s Legacy products here, 10 of a dozen hitting the board.

Race 6: R. Carey, Jr. Memorial ($105k) 3cP—Fox Valley Patriot should offer the best bet among three trained by Erv Miller.  

Race 7: E. Dygert Memorial ($90k) 3cT—Niko Man looks to be an overlay from post 8. The well-bred trotter could add to a big night for trainer Miller.

Race 9: Kadabra Championship ($121k) 2cT—Fireballs Pride, the only son of Dejarmbro in this group, is ornery and up for the big score. 

Race 10: Incredible Finale ($174k) 2cP—Fox Valley Julian will have a better chance than his odds reflect putting in a peak performance.

Race 11: Incredible Tillie ($187k) 2fP—Fox Valley Sadie always does her best and will do even better going for the biggest prize.

Saturday, Oct. 14

BRAVE LADIES

Northfield

Nine soph-filly pacers negotiate the Flying Turns in the $100k Courageous Lady. Positioned to pace her best and tally her eighth win in 10 starts this season, Deborah Daguet’s Rec Time is the perfect daughter of Huntsville. She may win this with enough pace left over to go around four more turns. 

H2W LIST

Horses to watch (H2W) are strong contenders evaluated from overnight-race charts (including qualifiers), replays, and trainers’ current win percentages. Each horse appears in two consecutive lists if it does not win on its first listing.

H2W horses are suggested for win, place, show (across the board) wagering, and to be included in exotic combinations.

Exactas listed in H2W results reflect an H2W horse finishing second to a race favorite or if the first two finishers were on the list when an asterisk appears for cold exactas. The note “ok” determines prices are correct when a show price exceeds the place price or all three prices are identical. 

Some results reflect horses racing after preview blog posts and appear the following week. As well, some horses will not appear a second time when their first time is followed by a race at a non-pari-mutuel fair. They will get a second time on the list when returning to a betting race.
