Thursday, May 26

MOHAWK MILES

Each Thursday we highlight some probable long shots from Mohawk Park. If they do not win at first crack we add them to the H2W the following week as bet-backs or in selected features, adding new possibilities to this section.

R3 – Willtowin Hanover: Bet-back was 5-1 hanging on the outside too long.
R10 – Do You See It: Bet-back should be a big price off a bad finish at 5-1.

NJ SIRES STAKES

Meadowlands, Races 7, 9

The soph filly and colt ($240k for both) trotters bred in New Jersey are on stage. Although on top of the filly list is #9 Venerable, last year’s big earner, we see price and purpose with Jim Campbell’s #6 Fashion Schooner. She is two for three and is looking as sharp as a Walner-sired filly can look.

The colts’ division is matched tightly and with 10 weeks left to the Hambletonian it is near impossible to defend one against the other nine; any one of these can improve greatly. Marcus Melander has a pair here and we are willing to make a leap of faith with his secondary entry, #8 Classic Hill. A good price is expected considering a few in here have shown stronger performances recently.

FEATURES

Meadowlands, Race 4

Last week, #4 Weslynn Quest, at 23-1, was as bad off as the rest of the trotters trying to get to Atlanta; they knew it was tougher than tough and the crowd did, also. The second betting choice was 12-1, the third 13-1 and so on. This week there is no Atlanta in the Open Trot and “Quest” has had two races over the track and is a good bet to pull off an upset against #3 Venerate, who debuts for the season. Certainly #7 Sonofamistery will also suck up the win cash and should be respected in all exotics with Weslynn Quest.

SBOA SOPHS

Mohawk, Race 8

As we keep an early watch on the soph-pacing crop, we handicap a field of 10 Ontario-breds in the SBOA $122k final at Mohawk.
#9 Magical Arthur was 8-1 making win-worthy advances in mid-May when he paced into trouble late, thus being placed third from fourth. Some of his foes here were beaten (no pun intended to trainer Anthony Beaton) by him in that race.
#3 Sport Secret was placed second, finishing third, in that same race, going a tougher trip at 9-1.
