Harness Preview: Picks and Horses to Watch Nov. 3-7

Selected features, stakes coverage and the never-ending TwinSpires’ horses-to-watch list (H2W) share keys to success in exotics, win, place and show payoffs.

Thursday, November 3

MOHAWK MILES

With the Breeders Crown championships determined, we are expanding our Mohawk Miles second. We are highlighting more than only two races featuring probable long shots from the Canadian harness meet. Continuing, however, is the rule that if any horses mentioned do not win at first crack they will appear the following week in the H2W as bet-backs or in selected features, adding new possibilities to this section.

R3 — #6 Chesapeake Sunrise (5-1): Off a sharp qualifier, ready and able.
R7 — #1 Pointto Sweet Lou (4-1): Evenly and well supported previously at 5-1.
R8 — #5 Cherie Amour (3-1): soared to second at 19-1.
R9 — #1 P L Ooooooooooyah (3-1): Power-packed 12-1 shot took third.
R10 — #7 Swan By Land (10-1): Overland route at 17-1.

MATRON STAKES

Dover

Race 1, 2yo filly trot ($129k)
#3 Quick Stop (8-5) (by Tactical Landing) was dynamic in Kentucky, grinding a near win at 11-1. She’s the top earner in the small field and should be flexible on the extra turn.

Race 4, 2yo filly pace ($156k)
Brett Pelling’s #5 Earthwindfire (8-5) scorched the field in a Freehold state-bred stakes, winning by 10 lengths and this event has one less turn. She already has five wins in eight starts and few to fear here.

Race 10, 2yo colt pace ($155k)
#8 Ervin Hanover (2-1) gets another outside post but comes from a pair of Breeders Crown races, making him an automatic bet-back among seven that have not faced such class. Due to the post, he may be offering more than expected from the drop.

Friday, November 4

CUSTOM HOOSIER

Hoosier Park

Race 5, The USS Indianapolis Memorial ($100k)
Seven soph-filly pacers are featured in the track’s exclusive mile. #1 Sea Silk (9-5) dead-heated for seventh in last week’s Breeders Crown (BC) and gets our automatic backing for the drop in class. #4 Lee Loo (15-1) is a good exotic partner for a price.

Race 7, The Crossroads of America ($110k)
Eight filly trotters battle in this indigenous feature. #6 Gabbys C Note (8-1) loves to win and may love it more at the promise of this purse. She could offer a good price, too, as the crowd shops for bargains beyond the obvious.

Race 9, The Carl Erskine ($200k)
The pair of glamour-boy trotters coming from the BC final - #2 Branded By Lindy (9-2) and #4 King Of The North (8-5) - will dominate the pools and certainly the later will take the top dollars. Still, “Lindy” was a beaten favorite in that “King"-sweeping BC final and we look for better odds on Lindy as well as a better trip to win this.

Race 11, The Monument Circle ($200k)
Soph-colt pacers line up in the final custom-Hoosier stakes on the program. Here, we make note of the BC visitor, #9 Bythemissal (6-5), but we break our own rule and go for an upset. He had no excuse losing so badly as a favorite in the BC final and he is disadvantaged leaving from post 9 if he starts as he did in that race. So, for price and purpose we back local #3 Rip Wheeler (15-1). A mighty earner for Walter Haynes, Jr, this guy seems to have what it takes to blow this field away.
