Harness Preview: Picks and Horses to Watch Oct.13-17

Selected features, stakes coverage and the never-ending TwinSpires’ horses-to-watch list (H2W) share keys to success in exotics, win, place and show payoffs.

Thursday, October 13

MOHAWK MILES

Each Thursday we highlight some probable long shots from Mohawk Park. If they do not win at first crack we add them to the H2W the following week as bet-backs or in selected features, adding new possibilities to this section.
R4 — #7 Kenogami Rebel (6-1): A strong third finish at 14-1.
R8 — #9 Mats MVP (5-1): A bet-back from last week does better from the outside here.

MARYLAND MOB

Rosecroft

Maryland Sires Stakes (MDSS) finals are on the program. Featuring two-year-olds, each division is worth $75k.

Race 1
The colt trot field may not be tough if #9 How Doo Yoo Goo (5-2) gets a good spot or shoots to the lead early. The Googoo Gaagaa son may be an overlay at post 9.

Race 2
The filly pace features top-winning and-earning #1 Val's Girl (2-1). Nine for nine is tough to bet against so either pass or look for a possible upset at a good price with #7 Lloyd's Loves (4-1). She may get the kind of trip that beat Bulldog Hanover last week.

Race 3
The filly trot has five of nine gals sired by Googoo Gaagaa. Of them, first in line for our price and purpose is #4 Excuse My Beauty (9-2). The two hot gals leave from the outside and will have to struggle for a good spot while “Beauty” coasts and has the most left at the wire and pays the most of the trio.

Race 4
The colt pace offers an upset with the high-earning #6 Nicki's All In (8-1). This is like a drop-down move for the wealthy lad.

Friday, October 14

HOOSIER’S BEST

Hoosier Park

Indiana Sires Stakes (INSS) Super Finals line the program, each worth $250k. Listed here are the freshman races. Soph picks are in the H2W below.

Race 3
2yo filly trot – Lightly raced #2 Helpineedsomebody (20-1) earned her way here and gets our vote to present a mild upset.

Race 6
2yo colt trot – #3 Bourbon Courage (3-1) is not afraid of this group as he strengthens his sire’s legacy and trainer Erv Miller’s seasonal bankroll.

Race 8
2yo filly pace – #7 Fortunada (8-1) is an upset choice here with her six-for-10 win slate, missing the board just once.

Race 13
2yo colt pace – #7 Art It Is (7-2) has been nothing but terrific and should cap the season with much promise for a sophomore campaign.

Saturday, October 15

CANADA CAVALCADE

Mohawk Park

Ontario Sires Stakes Super Finals (SF) are worth $225 each. Two-year-old SFs are our focus.

Race 1
2yo filly trot – #8 Winooski improves with each race and can pay well doing it here.

Race 2
2yo colt trot – #2 Tuscan Prince salutes sire Kadabra in this with a super win.

Race 4
2yo filly pace – #2 Momentary Control represents a good sire getting better.

Race 8
2yo colt pace – #3 Stockade Seelster continues a sterling season with a win here.

LADY BE GOOD

Northfield Park

Soph-filly pacers go for $100k in one of the track’s signature events. Ake Svanstedt’s #2 Valar Dohaeris is a Huntsville filly doing what his prodigy does best—outracing him to brand him as a tough sire regardless of his own performance on track. In 10 starts she has not missed the board using her inherited speed which will greatly enjoy the track’s Flying Turns.

INTERNATIONAL

Yonkers

This $1 million race is impossible to measure but we will go with a small bet on #6 Back Of The Neck (7-2). He is sharp now and Ake Svanstedt’s experience in Europe and at Yonkers and with all of his trotters in the USA has to be a plus for what may happen with all of the unknowns involved. Note this is a 1 1/4-mile race.
