COLT CREW

Friday / July 23

Meadows

Pennsylvania Sires Stakes (PASS) for soph-colt trotters hold two events worth $73k each.

The first PASS includes the domineering Whiskey Blu, a winner of 11 from 16 starts. The busy early season rolls its way to the Hambletonian and this is one more race that could decide if the Southwind Frank colt will drop in the box for elims next week.

The only surprise could come from Father Patrick colt Speed Away, who hit the board once in three tries, not enough to toss him out even against the Ron Burke super favorite.

The second PASS also includes a few probable favorites. Jujubee is a local with 11 races, eight of them wins, to his season. Working a lot less yet facing better, Julie Miller’s Sunny Crockett has lost only one in five starts. A probable third choice for the crowd and a good choice for price and purpose is Per Engblom’s Ethan T Hanover. He has had his share of miscues but he is earning well in the crop and has had eyes on the Hambo since last season when he sucked up a bunch of dough. A good price is expected here.

ADIOS DE TRES

Saturday / July 24

Meadows

The Adios elims have attracted three divisions worth of glamour-boy pacers. As usual, some of the division’s lesser-known pacers will be involved in three elimination races. Here are the colts we feel you should consider in all of your wagers based on your own measure of values.

Southwind Gendry – Class of the 23 at this point in the season. If he paces like he did winning a Meadowlands Pace elim he rattles his elim foes.

Abuckabett Hanover – Under rated for a few weeks but in no way a toss out, but in tough leaving from the outside with “Gendry” on the rail.

Chase H Hanover – In his last few starts against the best in the division he has piled up the earnings. Gets the rail in his elim.

One Eight Hundred – Has not performed his best against the best and gets the outside in his elim against “Chase.”

Lou's Pearlman – Ron Burke’s mid-level pacer is a big threat from the rail in his elim.

GRAND CIRCUIT

Saturday / July 24

Meadowlands

The Tompkins-Geers stakes for soph colt-and-filly trotters ($43-plus) go at the Meadowlands these days and the casts of the two for colts and the two for fillies include trotters that want to be here in a week to earn berths for the August classics.

In split one for colts, Venerate has to prove to his connections that his stride is not warped. Last week he jumped badly at the start and lost to the ever-improving Sonofamistery. He faces lesser here but galloping gives the weakest foes an edge. Perhaps from an outside post, and his recent miscues, he will lose favor and offer better odds while racing on his best behavior, when he can beat all of these. There is no other option but to pass, so judge for yourself.

The second colt split is a better betting race with a good outsider—Caruso. Joe Holloway’s Father Patrick product needs to win this to get into the elims and will be a fine price here considering any improvement puts him at least a nose ahead of each foe.

The fillies are not ruled by any entry in round one. We lean in for Ake Svanstedt’s Wet My Whistle as Ake is always aiming for filling the Oaks elims with his best current qualifiers and this Muscle Hill filly is very good.

The other filly episode is only worth it if the crowd lays off Piper Hanover because she is in a fine spot to race her way into the Oaks and Tony Alagna’s stock are tuned tight this time of year.

GOGO GERRITY

Saturday / July 24

Saratoga

Through the season so far, in which This Is The Plan has lead the Free-For-All Open pacing division, I find it difficult to realize that Leonidas A is not the powerhouse he was at Yonkers early in the year. Changing barns should not upset a horse as it appears it has upset Leonidas A.

From the rail, much more like Yonkers than the other stakes since his success there, Saratoga could find Leonidas A on the engine again, especially with This Is The Plan leaving from post 7. If he does not steal it wire to wire, he could coast behind This Is The Plan if he fires for the top and pull out to do his best racing chasing that one down to the wire—at a price he would never have paid at Yonkers.
