TwinSpires Staff

January 15th, 2023

The TwinSpires Harness Blog Weekly Update covers our successes and failures from selected features and the H2W (horses-to-watch list). H2W horses through the following Monday appear in the next Update’s results.

Thursday, Jan. 12

Due to cancellation of the program, this week’s four contenders for our Mohawk Miles feature will appear in the feature or otherwise in their next race entry.

At Dover, we buried the exacta number cold. Our winner, Bionic ($9.00, $5.40, $3.00), was followed by Levi At Play ($20.00, $7.20) to complete a $122.20 exacta.

Friday, Jan. 13

Dancin With Rose ($4.80, $3.20, $2.80) won our featured race at Northfield.

Cal-Expo canceled its program again in light of the damaging storms attacking the length of California.

Saturday, Jan. 14

Our Power Plays contenders at the Meadowlands did not accomplish much. Only one played a part in the two exotics offered - Bobcat Bay ($5.80, $3.40). The others included 7-2 Stag Party (eighth), 18-1 Mullinax (fourth), and 30-1 On Accident (fifth).

H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Exactas listed include a H2W horse finishing second to a race-favorite or if the first two finishers are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses are listed—a cold exacta). The note “OK” determines that prices are correct (even when a show price exceeds a place price or all prices are the same).

Please note that some results reflect horses racing after the blog posts (they appear the following week).

This week, there were 33 active H2W horses (a 15% win hit rate and a 30% ATB [across-the-board] hit). Horses with asterisks before their names were tweets @FrankCotolo. Follow for late choices.

NEWS & NOTES

A FBP (Flat Bet Profit) report this week figures Jim Morrill Jr.’s five-win program at Batavia on Jan. 12. Morrill’s winners totaled $21.80, with a high price of $6.10, (the only winner that was not a favorite). Morrill drove in nine races, a total investment (at $2 base bets) of $18.00. The FBP profit (betting only Morrill-driven horses with no other handicapping applied) was $3.80.

Productive sire Broadway Hall was euthanized in Finland at age 23 due to an eye disease. The trotter, campaigned by Arlene and Jules Siegel and trained by Jim Campbell, was undefeated at two. Due to injury, Broadway Hall did not race at three. He went to stud in 2004, siring 796 foals in the United States. The richest was Broad Bahn, winner of the 2011 Hambletonian (and a score for TwinSpires harness players), who took a mark of 1:53 and earned $1,547,988. In 2017, Broadway Hall was exported to Europe and stood two years in Sweden before he was sent to pasture in Finland.

In a sad synchronicity, Broadway Hall’s sire Conway Hall was euthanized on Wednesday at the age of 28. “Conway” was one of the most influential trotting sires of the modern era. He retired from stud in 2020. Conway sired Trotting Triple Crown champ Windsongs Legacy, a prolific sire until he died after his fourth year at stud. He sired Chapter Seven, who sired Walner, whose first crops featured stakes winners.
