With the holiday shopping season in full swing and most tracks offering a steady diet of overnight races, the Saturday cards at Yonkers Raceway in New York and Rosecroft Raceway in Maryland could provide shrewd bettors with a little extra spending cash.
The latter portion of the card at Yonkers offers a trio of races for older pacers where horses with some hidden good form could prove victorious at decent prices.
In the ninth, a non-winners of $18,000 last six races condition contested at one-mile and one-sixteenth, Dancin Yankee draws the rail one week after starting from post seven and being stuck behind dull cover in a paceless race and should regain his winning ways. The Josh Green trainee was a weekly fixture in the lucrative, prestigious George Morton Levy Memorial Series for aged pacers over the New York half-mile oval last spring and gets class relief and the ideal post for displaying his talents this weekend.
Two races later on the card, Bakin On The Beach also looks poised to prevail in a non-winners of $25,000 last six event for older pacers. This Mark Harder trainee was used hard from post seven in a fast half in a one-mile and one-sixteenth affair last weekend and still lasted for second. He owns a solid 4-9-8 slate and $110,000 bankroll from 34 starts on the season and should be able to make the modest class jump this weekend despite heading into the race off a narrow setback against non-winners of $18,000 last six company.
Then in the Yonkers finale on Saturday night, another non-winners of $25,000 last six class for aged pacers, Its A Good Thing should live up to his name in this event for trainer Heidi Rohr. Already boasting a 6-7-6 slate and seasonal earnings of $165,000 this year from 34 starts, Its A Good Thing got used hard to the half last week in the finale and finished second as the 8-5 choice and comes right back to the same class where he should make immediate amends in the nightcap.
The Saturday night card at Rosecroft Raceway may offer a different level of competition from the top-notch overnight pacers at Yonkers, but several local pacers look poised for their best effort and possibly at generous prices.
In the second race on the card, look for Southern Hoss (Mark Gray) to rebound from a fourth-place effort as the 5-2 favorite in the same non-winners of three races lifetime class. Southern Hoss got pressed virtually every step of the way last weekend in the Saturday finale and three of his rivals benefited from the fast early tempo up front and went past him late. But Southern Hoss should be able to dictate the pace this weekend and regain his winning ways.
Two races later on the card, look for Rice Crisp Breeze (Wayne Long) to benefit from his seasonal debut one week ago when he led most of the way before settling for second as the 3-5 choice in the non-winners of one event. Trained by Judith Welty of Shady Breeze fame locally, Rice Crisp Breeze probably will not offer much value in the non-winners of one affair but even-money would appear to be a generous price in his second outing.
Several races later in the evening's seventh race, the first half of the split, non-winners of $3500 last five class for filly-mare pacers, look for Pilgrims Danica (Corey Braden) to make a successful double-jump in class following her lopsided score against non-winners of $1500 last five company last weekend. The Ken Schlotzhauer trainee led throughout on a clear, uncontested lead in wicked fractions and romped home last week and will be tough to overtake late if rated early.
Then in the finale on the Saturday card, the other half of the split, non-winners of $3500 last five class for pacing fillies and mares, look for Bettor Thoughts (Chris Page) to regain her winning ways for trainer E. Andy Savage. Last weekend against similar foes, Bettor Thoughts raced first over through two turns and lasted for the show spot while virtually carrying the top two finishers home. With a decent trip this weekend she could return double-digits on a $2 win wager while facing many of her same rivals in the nightcap.
