Harrah's Philadelphia offers seven Liberty Bell
While many sports enthusiasts were watching the full slate of opening Sunday games in the NFL, harness racing fans turned their attention to the home of the idle NFL champions as Harrah's Philadelphia offered seven Liberty Bell divisions for sophomores, four for pacers and three for trotters.
In the opening race on the card, Iluvtomakemoney (Dexter Dunn) rallied from off the pace to forge a 24-1 surprise in the first $30,000 Liberty Bell split for three-year-old colt pacers. A sophomore son of Well Said trained by Mark Harder, Iluvtomakemoney ended a long drought to notch his second win in 15 starts this year and seventh victory in 28 career outings by getting the mile in 1:53.1 over 20-1 outsider Somebaddude.
Then two races later in the second Liberty Bell split for sophomore pacing colts, Winston (Corey Callahan) rebounded from a dull effort in the $500,000 Messenger Stakes at Yonkers Raceway to post a mild 4-1 upset in 1:53. A sophomore son of Western Ideal trained by John Butenschoen notched his fifth win in 14 starts this year by edging 9-5 favorite Go West Go Fast (Matt Kakaley).
Then several races later and right at the midway point of the card, the upsets continued when Wheels On Fire (Kakaley) benefited from smart handling throughout to edge favored Macadoodledoo (Tim Tetrick). A sophomore son of the late, great Somebeachsomewhere trained by Burke, Wheels On Fire rebounded from a pair of miscues to record his seventh win in 13 starts this year by getting the mile in 1:52.1 as the 4-1 third choice.
Then one race later in the first of three Liberty Bell divisions for sophomore trotting colts, Mississippi Storm ( (Tetrick) continues the trend of upsets when he edged Scirocco Rob (Callahan) in 1:54.3. A sophomore son of Cantab Hall trained by Tom Fanning, Mississippi Storm rebounded from an early miscue in the $500,000 Yonkers Trot to record his third win in 14 starts this year and his seventh tally in 22 career tries.
Then one race later in the second Liberty Bell split for sophomore trotting colts, Patent Leather (Tetrick) restored a hint of sanity to the proceedings when he prevailed as the 4-5 favorite in 1:54. A sophomore son of Broadway Hall trained by Jim Campbell for owner Fashion Farms, Patent Leather notched his fourth win from 13 starts this year. Bred by Virginia "Leigh" Louthan, the petite blacksmith and trainer from Delaware of Don Boss Vita fame, Patent Leather had earned berths in the Hambletonian, Zweig and Pennsylvania Sire Stakes finals.
Then two races later in the third Liberty Bell division for trotters, Toast Of Lindy (Andy Miller) forged a mild 7-2 upset when he rebounded from a dull effort in the Stallion Series final to score in 1:56.1. Another son of Cantab Hall trained by Julie Miller - her other is a much more talented sort named Met's Hall - Toast Of Lindy notched his third win in 10 starts this year and sixth win in 18 lifetime tries.
Then two races later in the last and clearly deepest and fastest Liberty Bell division of the afternoon, Hayden Hanover (Andy Miller) easily lived up to his role as the 1-9 favorite when he rebounded from a narrow defeat behind Dorsoduro Hanover in a PASS final to defeat JK Wildfire (Dunn) by four lengths in 1:51. A Somebeahsomewhere colt trained by Julie Miller, Hayden Hanover sports a 2-4-1 slate and $154,000 banked from 12 starts this year and a 4-8-4 slate and $440,000 bankroll from 23 career outings.
