Harrington hosts Bobby Quillen Memorial
On a night when muggy conditions enveloped the Mid-Atlantic Region, Harrington Raceway offered its signature race on one of its more lucrative cards of the season when it presented the $150,000 Bobby Quillen Memorial for older pacers in addition to numerous Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund eliminations for juveniles.
Just past the midway point of the card in the $150,000 Quillen, American Hisory (Joe Bongiorno) overcame an extended third over journey and launched a bold move down the backside to join favored None Bettor A (Jason Bartlett) on the far turn then overhauled that one in the lane to score in 1:49.3 as the 4-1 third choice.
A four-year-old American Ideal stallion trained by Tony Alagna, American History recorded just his third win from 14 starts this year but he doubled his seasonal earnings to $155,000 with his third emphatic win on a half-mile oval in his last four outings. Two starts back he led throughout to capture the 4YP Open at Yonkers Raceway in 1:50.1, two weeks after scorching the oval in 1:50 to equal the all-age track record briefly.
"This horse really has a powerful brush," Bongiorno said. "I would like to see how fast he could go if I could get him a breather to the half. But on any given day he can pace with the best pacers around. I've been fortunate enough to get some really good drives for Tony. I've got one in the Jugette on Wednesday and one in the Jug on Thursday, but I just found out he got the eight hole."
Two races earlier in a non-winners of $13,001 last five starts for older pacers, Late Mail N (Corey Callahan) foiled a mild 2-1 upset when he gained command soon after the outset, carved out honest fractions through the first three calls and sprinted clear in the lane to a three-length score in 1:51.3. A six-year-old Bettor's Delight gelding trained by Michael Hall, Late Mail N notched his second win in 24 starts this year and lowered his lifetime mark in the process.
One race earlier in the $18,500 Open for older pacers, Highland Beach Boy (Victor Kirby) rallied from well off the pace and second over to forge a 17-1 upset in 1:52.3. A four-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding owned and trained by Bryan Truitt, Highland Beach Boy recorded his second straight score and now owns an 8-3-5 slate and nearly $80,000 banked from 27 starts this year.
In the two DSBF elims for freshman pacing colts, Leonard's Legacy (Jonathan Roberts) easily lived up to his billing as the 2-5 favorite when he overcame post six to gain command before the opener, got a breather to the half and romped home four lengths clear in 1:56.3. Two races earlier on the card, American Nitro (Kirby) won the other DSBF split handily in 1:56.2 for trainer Les Givens.
