Holland's North American Racing Picks for May 5

TwinSpires began providing daily picks for all spectrum of our players through the lens of handicapper Tim Holland at the start of the great isolation. Below are picks for May 5 in North American racing at Fonner Park and Will Rogers Downs.

Race 1

Newcomer #9 Daisy Fiftyseven (15-1) has a decent win-early pedigree being by 11% first-out sire Backstabber and out of a mare by King of Scat, whose offspring win 10% of their first outings. 3-year-old has been working forwardly for Caster, who wins with 9% of his first-timers and with 14% overall in maiden claiming events. Filly may be ready for a good first outing under Steinberg, who has won with 19% of his rides for the barn in the past two months.

Race 3

#7 Word to the Wise (3-1) returns to the Bravo barn off a weakening second-place finish over 6 furlongs last month. 5-year-old has now hit the board in both of two starts here and Bravo wins with 15% of his runners in allowance events. Gelding can be on or near the lead from the start under Eikleberry, who has won with one of his last eight rides for Bravo.

Race 5

Trainer Diodoro has won with 29% of his runners at this meet and saddles #2 My Wise Cat (3-1), who comes off a win from just off the pace over 5 furlongs here last month. Diodoro wins with 27% of his runners that won last time out and chestnut has a record of 3-2-1-0 on this oval. Son of Flashy Wise Cat can be in good position throughout with Kennedy remaining aboard.

Race 8

Maidens going 6 furlongs include #5 Moro Bass (12-1), a newcomer from the barn of Karl Broberg, who wins with 10% of his first-time starters. Gelding has a good win early pedigree, being out of a mare by 16% first-out sire In Excess, and is a half-brother to one winner. Broberg has won with 23% of runners at this meet and dark bay could be ready to win at first asking under Cabrera.

Fonner Park

Race 1

#7 Trask (3-1) comes off a weakening fourth place finish at this level and distance last month in his second start after a four-month break. Son of Data Link has won three of 18 starts on dirt and trainer Martinez wins with 13% of runners third off a layoff. Gelding can be on or near the early lead under Armando Martinez, who has won with 27% of his rides for the barn in the past two months.

Race 3

A solid early pace may set this up for a closer such as Spunky Kitten (7-2), who finished well from off the pace when second in his latest over the track and distance at this level last month. Gelding has a record of 5-1-2-1 on this oval and trainer Lemburg has won with 13% of his starters at this meet. Son of Kitten’s Joy may be along in time with Bethke retaining the mount.

Race 6

Trainer Donlin has won with three of his last 12 runners that won last time out and saddles #1 Giant Gamble (3-1), who held on to narrowly win his latest after leading from the start last month. Chestnut now has a record of 9-2-1-3 on this oval and appears to be the one to catch again with Martinez remaining aboard.

Race 7

#7 May Flowers (3-1) has a record of 4-1-0-3 on this oval and comes off a closing third-place finish over the track and distance last month. Trainer Hall has won with 15% of his runners at this meet and daughter of Congrats has won four of 23 starts at this distance. 8-year-old should find a solid pace to help her closing run-style with Fackler up.
