Horses to bet in Belmont's $81,453 Pick 6 carryover

The Pick 6 went unsolved on Saturday at Belmont Park, which means the $1 wager boasts a hefty $81,453 carryover for Sunday’s card.

After analyzing the six-race sequence, we’ve identified a live longshot and a possible single worth building tickets around:

Race 5: $62,500 Allowance Optional Claiming (1 1/4 miles on turf): #4 Megayacht (10-1)

At least a few folks figure to view #2 Soldier Rising (7-5) as a viable single, and understandably so. The Christophe Clement trainee cracked the trifecta in a trio of major stakes on the New York circuit last fall, running second in the Saratoga Derby (G1) and Jockey Club Derby before coming home third (beaten just half a length) in the Red Smith S. (G2).

But Soldier Rising hasn’t run since November, and racing 1 1/4 miles off a lengthy layoff isn’t guaranteed to be a winning formula. With this in mind, why not oppose Soldier Rising with his stablemate Megayacht?

Megayacht ran second in a maiden special weight over this course and distance last September before traveling to Gulfstream Park, where he employed pace-tracking tactics to win a 1 3/8-mile maiden special weight by two lengths. The son of Tonalist subsequently ran second and first in a pair of $35,000 allowance optional claimers racing 1 1/2 miles over Gulfstream’s synthetic Tapeta track.

As a half-brother to two-time turf graded stakes winner Fast Boat, Megayacht has the pedigree to shine on grass. Returning to the lawn should only help his chances, and Megayacht has enough tactical speed to sit a favorable trip and bid for the lead sooner than Soldier Rising. With only five starts under his belt, Megayacht still has upside, so who’s to say he can’t spring a surprise under hot jockey Joel Rosario?

Race 8: License Fee S. (six furlongs on turf): #2 Too Sexy (1-1)

If Christophe Clement is going to win on Sunday with a runner returning from a lengthy layoff, Too Sexy might be a better choice than Soldier Rising. The five-year-old mare is dashing only six furlongs off the break and should be tough to beat if she brings her A-game.

Too Sexy was in strong form sprinting six furlongs over the Belmont lawn last fall, trouncing an $80,000 allowance optional claimer before dominating the Floral Park S. by 3 1/4 lengths. She wrapped up the season with a close second in the six-furlong Autumn Days S. at Aqueduct.

Jockey Joel Rosario has won at a 33% rate teaming up with Clement over the last two months, so we’ll count on Too Sexy to visit the winner’s circle as a short-priced single.
