Horses to single in June 13 carryovers at Golden Gate Fields and Monmouth Park

If you’re a fan of the excellent betting value offered by non-jackpot carryovers, you’ll be happy to know there are a handful of enticing prizes to chase at opposite ends of the country on Sunday.

A Pick 4, a Pick 5, a Pick 6—there’s something for everyone at Monmouth Park and Golden Gate Fields. Let’s explore the main carryovers on tap and highlight a couple of appealing singles to build tickets around:

Golden Gate Fields, Race 7: $53,633 Pick 6 mandatory payout (7:04 p.m. ET)

The winter/spring meet at Golden Gate Fields wraps up on Sunday with a deep 12-race card stacked from top to bottom with competitive races. A $53,633 jackpot in the 20-cent Golden Pick 6 is slated for mandatory dispersal, and the sequence looks ultra-tough on paper. A total of 59 horses have been entered, which equates to 823,680 possible outcomes before scratches.

Given the competitive nature of the sequence, bettors who correctly assemble all six winners should be rewarded with excellent payoffs. It’s the assembling all six winners part that promises to be tricky, particularly for bettors hoping to play on small budgets.

The good news is, Race 12 (the grand finale of the meet) offers a possible single in the form of #12 Torrey’s Girl (2-1). Sprinting six furlongs against maiden special weight company should suit the bay filly just fine. In her debut sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs at Golden Gate last month, Torrey’s Girl carved out fast fractions of :21.77 and :45.18 before weakening in the final furlong to finish second by a nose.

This encouraging first try earned an encouraging 82 Brisnet Speed rating, the highest figure in Sunday’s field. Trainer Jamey Thomas wins at a 20% rate with second-time starters, and at a 28% rate in maiden special weights, so there’s no reason to think Torrey’s Girl can’t produce another big effort. The only concern is her outside post draw, but there isn’t a ton of speed in Sunday’s field, so Torrey’s Girl should be capable of clearing the majority of her rivals to avoid an overly wide journey.

Saturday was a pretty much a day of chaos at Monmouth Park, where longshots prevailed left and right and the final four winners on the card started at 79-1, 11-1, 14-1, and 5-1. When the dust settled, there was not only a carryover of $67,940 for Sunday’s 50-cent Early Pick 5, but also a (practically unprecedented) $90,932 carryover for the 50-cent Early Pick 4.

If you’re looking for a horse to build tickets around, check out #3 Exxtop (4-1) in Race 2. The event in question is a 1 1/16-mile, $7,500 claimer for runners who have never won two races, which should suit Exxtop just fine. The son of Exaggerator finished third over this class level on May 28 at Monmouth and looms as the lone speed in Sunday’s small field, so an uncontested lead should be in the offing. Since 42% of Monmouth’s 1 1/16-mile dirt routes have been won in gate-to-wire fashion this meet, Exxtop’s speed is a meaningful advantage.

Another runner worth considering as a single is #5 Running Memories (2-1) in Race 5, a 5 1/2-furlong grass allowance race for fillies and mares. The Joseph Orseno trainee has gone 3-for-4 in five-furlong turf dashes at Gulfstream Park, with her lone defeat coming with a troubled trip in the Melody of Colors S.

Running Memories has plenty of tactical speed, but is effective rallying from a stalking position, so she’ll have options for working out a clean trip under ultra-hot jockey Paco Lopez. Throw in the fact Orseno has gone 4-2-0-1 (50%) at Monmouth this meet, and it’s hard to view Running Memories as anything less than a deserving win choice.
