Horses to single in lucrative Belmont, Gulfstream Pick 6 carryovers

May 13th, 2023

A couple of lucrative Pick 6 carryovers are up for grabs this Saturday.

At Gulfstream Park, the $408,801 carryover in the 20-cent Rainbow Pick 6 is slated for mandatory dispersal. Gulfstream estimates the final pool will exceed $1.5 million.

Meanwhile at Belmont Park, the $1 Pick 6 features a regular non-jackpot carryover worth $51,969. The competitive sequence contains a pair of graded stakes.

Let’s check out both Pick 6s and identify singles worth building tickets around:

Gulfstream Park, Race 5: $408,801 Pick 6 mandatory payout (2:54 p.m. ET)

One of the feature races on Saturday at Gulfstream is the $100,000 Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies S., a five-furlong turf sprint that awards the winner an automatic entry to compete at Royal Ascot in England next month.

Trainer Wesley Ward has saddled a dozen winners at Royal Ascot, and #6 Ocean Mermaid (2-1) could take a trip abroad if she runs to expectations at Gulfstream. The daughter of brilliant European miler Kingman has posted nine timed workouts at Payson Park, Palm Meadows, and Keeneland, setting the stage for victory under Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez.

The fact Ward has gone 4-for-9 (44%) at Gulfstream since the start of the year add to the appeal. We’ll make Ocean Mermaid a Pick 6 single.

Belmont Park, Race 6: $51,969 Pick 6 carryover (3:40 p.m. ET)

The first leg of Belmont’s Pick 6 is the $200,000 Peter Pan (G3) for three-year-olds racing 1 1/8 miles on dirt. The Peter Pan is a local prep for the Belmont (G1), and the stoutly bred #9 Bishops Bay (8-5) looks like a viable contender for both races.

A son of Uncle Mo out of the stakes-winning Pioneerof the Nile mare Catch My Drift, Bishops Bay is unbeaten in two starts at Fair Grounds. In his debut sprinting six furlongs, the bay colt pressed the pace before battling on to beat future Lexington (G3) winner First Mission by three-quarters of a length. Then Bishops Bay stretched out for an $80,000 allowance optional claimer racing two turns and prevailed by a neck despite clipping heels badly early in the race.

Bishops Bay enters off a series of sharp workouts and looks like a stakes star in the making for high-percentage trainer Bishops Bay. We’ll take a stand and single Bishops Bay to start the Pick 6.

Good luck!
