How to bet Churchill's mandatory-payout $224,263 Pick 6 carryover

November 28th, 2021

The Churchill Downs Fall Meet wraps up on Sunday with a $224,263 Pick 6 carryover slated for mandatory dispersal.

The sequence for the 20-cent “Derby City 6” wager spans Race 7-12, with the first leg getting underway at 3:57 p.m. ET. And guess what? TwinSpires players who opt in to the Churchill Downs Closing Day Pick 6 $3,000 Hit It and Split It promotion will be playing for an additional $3,000 bonus jackpot.

Planning on playing along, but not sure which horses to use? We’ve got you covered with a race-by-race look at the sequence, plus a pair of proposed tickets:

Race 7: Maiden Special Weight (six furlongs)

A competitive sprint for juvenile fillies kicks off the Derby City 6. #13 Promises to Dance (2-1), beaten a head in her debut over this track and distance, is the fastest filly on paper and surely the one to beat. But she’s on the also-eligible list and will need a scratch in order to compete.

If Promises to Dance draws in, we’ll single the Brad Cox trainee at a short price. Otherwise, we’ll have to spread deep with #2 Peace Peddler (6-1), #3 Ari Oakley (9-2), #5 Madelyn’s Magic (6-1), and #12 Mercy Warren (12-1).

Race 8: $50,000 Claiming (six furlongs)

A large and evenly matched field has turned out to contest this claiming sprint for fillies and mares. You can make a case for many of the entrants, so we’ll take a scattershot approach with #2 Shaniah (6-1), #3 Caught Looking (3-1), #4 Lutescoot N Boogie (10-1), #8 Premier Wish (6-1), #9 Bizzy Echo (8-1), and #12 Off We Go (4-1).

Race 9: Maiden Special Weight (1 1/16 miles)

#2 Encourage (9-2), fourth in his debut over this track and class level, is eligible to take a step forward in his second start for hot trainer Kenny McPeek. But #5 O P Firecracker (3-1) and #7 Monologue (7-2) have posted sharper Brisnet Speed ratings and can’t be dismissed.

Race 10: Allowance (one mile)

#5 Cody’s Wish (9-5) has been sensational in his last two starts over this track and distance, dominating a fast maiden special weight before trouncing allowance company by 5 1/4 lengths. The Godolphin homebred has the pedigree to improve with maturity and might be something special, so we'll single Cody's Wish.

Race 11: $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (seven furlongs)

#7 Continuation (5-2) broke his maiden at Churchill during the spring and recently posted a flashy 101 Brisnet Speed rating when finishing second in the Bold Ruler H. (G3) at Belmont Park. Dropping in class should make Continuation tough to beat for hot trainer Dane Kobiskie, though the multiple graded stakes-placed #6 Frosted Grace (7-2) is eligible to challenge while returning from a layoff in his first start for trainer Tom Amoss.

Race 12: Allowance (one mile)

#2 Surrealist (4-1) is the fastest entrant on paper after breaking her maiden by four lengths at Keeneland last month, earning a field-best 94 Brisnet Speed rating. But her 1-for-10 lifetime record is cause for pause, so rather than rely exclusively on Surrealist, we’ll use #5 Silver Strand (4-1), #8 Lady Traveler (7-2), and #10 Lady Frosted (5-1) as backup.

If Promises to Dance draws in off the also-eligible list in Race 7, we’ll be able to play the Derby City 6 on a modest budget:

20-cent Derby City 6: 13 with 2,3,4,8,9,12 with 2,5,7 with 5 with 6,7 with 2,5,8,10 ($28.80)

But if Promises to Dance scratches, we’ll have to play a more expensive ticket:

20-cent Derby City 6: 2,3,5,12 with 2,3,4,8,9,12 with 2,5,7 with 5 with 6,7 with 2,5,8,10 ($115.20)

Good luck!
