How to bet Gulfstream Park's $7,480 Super High 5 carryover

On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the final race of the afternoon went by without any bettors assembling a winning ticket in the $1 Super High 5. You know what that means—it’s carryover time!

Indeed, the Sunday Card gets underway with a $7,480 Super High 5 carryover available in Race 1, a $25,000 maiden claimer taking place over 1 1/16 miles on turf. Nine horses have been entered, comprising a mix of three-year-olds and four-year-olds.

There are many viable contenders in the mix, but the best might be the four-year-old #6 Ember (2-1). The son of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Street Sense rallied to finish fourth in his debut for a $50,000 maiden claiming tag at Belmont Park last fall, then improved to second when employing pace-pressing tactics in an off-the-turf $40,000 event at Aqueduct.

Ember hasn’t run since Nov. 26, but trainer Christopher Clement wins at a respectable 18% rate with horses returning from layoffs of 90 days or more, suggesting Ember can vie for victory even off the layoff. Ember’s Brisnet Speed ratings are strong, and dropping in class should only help his chances.

#4 Swing Low (3-1) is another viable contender. The stretch-running gelding finished third over this course, distance, and class level on March 6, then ran fourth in a $40,000 maiden optional claimer on March 31. With a couple of 80+ Brisnet Speed ratings under his belt, Swing Low is fast enough to compete against Sunday’s field.

#1 My Brother Mike (5-1) hasn’t run quite as fast as the favorites on paper, but he’s been knocking heads against tougher competition over the Gulfstream turf course, finishing third in a $35,000 maiden claimer and ninth (beaten only five lengths) in a $50,000 maiden optional claimer. A favorable ground-saving trip could be in the offing while breaking from the rail.

For a live longshot, we can’t overlook #3 Starship Wizard (10-1). Fourth and third in his first two starts against $25,000 maiden claiming competition over the Gulfstream Park Tapeta track, Starship Wizard is bred to thrive on grass (four of his five siblings are turf winners), so switching surfaces has the potential to trigger a big step forward from Starship Wizard.
