How to bet Gulfstream's $3,844 Super High 5 carryover

The Sunday race card at Gulfstream Park opens with a $3,844 carryover in the Super High 5, which looks extremely difficult to hit.

Race 1 is a $12,500 claimer taking place over five furlongs on turf. No fewer than 11 horses have been entered, which equates to 55,440 possible outcomes. And since the minimum bet amount is $1, even as simplistic an approach as boxing five horses will cost $120.

In order to keep costs down, we’ll have to take a stand somewhere. In most cases, I would been keen to support as horse like #11 Kantharos’ Image (5-1), who is dropping in class out of three straight $25,000 allowance optional claimers sprinting five furlongs over the Gulfstream turf. But the eight-year-old gelding has seen his Brisnet Speed ratings slip in recent starts, and drawing the far outside post sets the stage for a wide trip. According to stats from Brisnet, inside posts have the edge in five-furlong turf sprints at Gulfstream.

Kantharos' Image remains a logical candidate to hit the board, but for win purposes, we’ll side with #6 Frenchmen Street (5-2). The son of Malibu Moon has been in great form for high-percentage trainer Saffie Joseph, rattling off three straight victories over Sunday’s course, distance, and class level. Frenchmen Street also has enough tactical speed to be involved from the outset, a benefit since 73% of Gulfstream’s five-furlong turf sprints are won by horses labeled with Brisnet “E” (early) or “E/P” (early/presser) running styles.

#7 Malraux (6-1) and #1 Marcelino (9-2) have placed behind Frenchman Street in recent starts, stamping the veteran geldings as logical contenders for the minor awards. #2 Allegedly Perfect (4-1) also warrants support while dropping in class out of $20,000 claiming company. He recently returned from a seven-month break to win a five-furlong turf sprint at Gulfstream via disqualification, so we know he can handle Sunday’s conditions.

For a longshot, #3 Graceful Kitten (15-1)—an alumnus from the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1)—is eligible to outrun expectations in his second start back from a six-month break. He was only beaten 3 1/4 lengths when fourth in a $25,000 allowance optional claimer over this course and distance on Sept. 11, and his Brisnet Speed ratings look competitive.

#10 Black Jet (15-1), returning from a six-month break for high-percentage trainer Georgina Baxter, is the final runner we’ll include on our Super High 5 tickets.
