How to bet Santa Anita's $11,047 Super High 5 carryover

March 20th, 2022

If you find five-figure, non-jackpot carryovers to be enticing, you’ll be excited to know the Sunday card at Santa Anita features an $11,047 Super High 5 carryover.

The prize pool for the $1 wager is available right off the bat in Race 1, a maiden special weight for fillies and mares racing 1 1/8 miles on turf. Eight horses have been entered (equating to 6,720 possible outcomes), and at first glance, #7 She’s a Bit Sassy (5-2) look tough to catch.

There’s barely any speed at all in Sunday’s field, so She’s a Bit Sassy’s tactical speed is appealing. On Feb. 25, she carved out a quick pace racing one mile at Santa Anita before weakening in the final furlong to finish second, beaten only three-quarters of a length. If she shakes loose on an easy lead, she’s bound to produce another strong finish.

But She’s a Bit Sassy is stretching out another furlong in distance, which could strain the limits of her stamina. And even if She’s a Bit Sassy sees out the distance, it’s possible #8 Busker Allie (2-1) is the better filly.

Busker Allie ran into a lot of trouble when chasing She’s a Bit Sassy in the Feb. 25 maiden heat. Early on, Busker Allie had a perfect position, saving ground along the rail in third place. But Busker Allie found herself boxed in down the homestretch, and she had to steady significantly in traffic before wheeling outside too late to close ground.

Busker Allie broke from the rail on Feb. 25, and she’ll start from the outside post on Sunday, setting the stage for a clean trip stalking She’s a Bit Sassy. Assuming Busker Allie doesn’t run into unexpected traffic, she can take advantage of the 1 1/8-mile distance and catch She’s a Bit Sassy down the homestretch.

Underneath the two favorites, #6 Ela Calimera Mou (6-1) is a logical choice after hitting the board in five straight maiden special weights on turf. #4 Barrister’s Ride (6-1) also warrants respect after finishing sixth in her debut sprinting; trainer Carla Gaines wins at a 22% rate with second-time grass starters. And don’t forget about #3 Abhita (4-1), who finished fourth in the Feb. 25 maiden heat against She’s a Bit Sassy.

Here’s how we’ll bet the Super High 5:

  • $1 Super High 5: 8 with 7 with 3,4,6 with 3,4,6 with 1,2,3,4,5,6 ($24)
  • $1 Super High 5: 8 with 3,4,6 with 7 with 3,4,6 with 1,2,3,4,5,6 ($24)
    Total: $48

Good luck!
