How to bet the 2020 Kentucky Derby for a large payoff
The Kentucky Derby - Coady Photography
There are two ways to bet the Kentucky Derby in search of a large payoff. You can play a bevy of longshots and hope for chaos. Or, you can combine the favorites with price horses in a large-denomination superfecta.
The latter approach will be my strategy for seeking a four- or five-figure payday betting the 2020 Kentucky Derby.
Last-minute scratches from #1 Finnick the Fierce (50-1) and #6 King Guillermo (20-1) have reduced the field to just 16 starters, and the absence of King Guillermo could significantly slow down the pace. As a result, heavy favorite #17 Tiz the Law (3-5) figures to sit a picture-perfect stalking trip and cruise to victory at a short price, with #16 Honor A. P. (5-1) following him home.
The top two slots of the superfecta are straightforward, so underneath I’ll give the edge to longshot deep closers.
Keep in mind, 15 of the last 16 Kentucky Derby races have seen at least one horse rally from 15th place or farther behind to finish in the superfecta, with many of them doing so at huge prices. It’s actually not uncommon for the early trailer to rally and finish on the board, simply by staying out of trouble and passing tired horses down the stretch.
For the bottom two slots of our superfecta, let’s key #3 Enforceable (30-1) and #12 Sole Volante (30-1). I’ve already made my case for Enforceable, a stoutly-bred son of Tapit who figures to show improvement in his second start off a layoff. A full brother to 2016 Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher Mohaymen, Enforceable possesses a deceptively strong turn of foot and should save ground while breaking from an inside post.
Sole Volante is just as intriguing. He never fired in the Belmont Stakes (G1) but previously clocked fast finishing fractions when prevailing in the Sam F. Davis (G3) and finished second in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2). The son of Karakontie is bred for grass, so the Churchill Downs main track — known for playing kindly toward turf horses — should be perfect for Sole Volante.
The bay gelding has been freshened since the Belmont and is training forwardly, setting the stage for a big rebound.
Let’s play a pair of $5 superfectas emphasizing Enforceable and Sole Volante underneath. If our perfect combination comes in —17 with 16 with 3,12 with 3,12 — we’ll cash for $10 and enjoy a massive payoff.
$5 superfecta: 17 with 16 with 3,12 with 2,3,10,12,13,15,18 ($60)
$5 superfecta: 17 with 16 with 2,3,10,12,13,15,18 with 3,12 ($60)
Good luck!
