How to bet the 2021 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

November 4th, 2021

Looking for a formidable handicapping challenge? Look no further than Friday’s 1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Del Mar.

A total of 14 two-year-old fillies have been entered in the one-mile turf test, and separating the key contenders is difficult. Historically, the Juvenile Fillies Turf has been dominated by the home team, with North American fillies claiming 11 of 13 renewals to date.

But if you’re willing to bet the Americans will take home top honors again in 2021, you’ll be hard-pressed to identify the best of the lot. Usually there’s a standout or two in the mix, but this year’s group appears evenly matched on paper. You can make a case for almost anyone.

Ultimately, we’ll lean toward a pair of fillies who seem destined to work out favorable trips. #1 Pizza Bianca (5-1) is the first. A stretch-running debut winner racing 1 1/16 miles at Saratoga, the daughter of Fastnet Rock was last seen finishing second in the one-mile Natalma S. (G1) at Woodbine, beaten only 2 1/4 lengths despite racing through tight quarters down the homestretch. This effort produced a solid 92 Brisnet Speed rating, and if Pizza Bianca can work out a ground-saving journey at Del Mar, victory isn’t out of the question.

#5 Bubble Rock (8-1) is the other appealing filly we’ll consider. A daughter of More Than Ready (who has already sired two Juvenile Fillies Turf winners), Bubble Rock has shown tactical speed sprinting and figures to be forwardly placed while stretching out over one mile. The Brad Cox trainee was particularly sharp in the six-furlong Matron S. (G3) at Belmont Park last month, rallying gamely to score by half a length in the quick time of 1:07.67.

We’re going to take a somewhat unorthodox approach to betting the Juvenile Fillies Turf. For starters, we’re going to place a $10 win bet on Bubble Rock—thanks to the Breeders’ Cup Money Back 2nd and 3rd offer from TwinSpires, we’ll receive a refund if she finishes second or third.

Then we’re going to key Bubble Rock and Pizza Bianca together on top of a deep trifecta ticket. It’s a pricey play, but if we catch the right combination of longshots underneath, we’ll be looking at a hefty payday.

Betting the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf:

  • $10 to win on #5 Bubble Rock

  • $1 Trifecta: 1,5 with 1,5,6,7,9,11,13,14 with 1,5,6,7,9,11,13,14 ($42)

  • Total: $52

Good luck!
