How to bet the 2021 Cary Grant Stakes
Seven California-bred hopefuls will contest the $100,000 Cary Grant S. at Del Mar on Sunday. The feature is run at seven furlongs on the main oval and attracted a really good field of accomplished contenders.
In a race lacking a confirmed front runner, the Bill Spawr-trained #4 Colt Fiction could be especially dangerous with a clean break. A four-time local winner from six starts on the surface, the chestnut son of Ministers Wild Cat had won or placed in six straight prior to a fourth-place result in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2), but he will receive a good measure of class relief on this occasion.
The six-year-old gelding is lightly raced with room for improvement, and will be hard to run down late with a clear lead in the early stages. Geovanni Franco will be in the stirrups.
Peter Miller’s #2 None Above the Law is a high-level performer on both turf and dirt, and the talented three-year-old looked the part when dominating the Real Good Deal S. on the oval in July. Gray son of Karakonite possesses a big turn of foot, and he will be doing his best work inside the final furlong under the guidance of Joe Bravo.
#1 Fashionably Fast enjoys the locale with an 8-3-3-0 lifetime line at Del Mar. The consistently good gelding has won or placed in eight races in succession, which includes a smart Harris Farm S. tally at Fresno last time out. Dean Pedersen trainee has the tactical speed to stay close early and have a chance in the lane with Tiago taking the reins.
#6 Loud Mouth, who upset this race in 2020, will be a key piece at a square price for the vertical exotics. Trained by Steve Knapp, the Boisterous five-year-old moves from the dirt to the main strip and shows three solid morning drills in advance of this tilt. The stalker will be well placed turning for home with Cedillo up.
