How to bet the 2021 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf

September 4th, 2021

A promising field of 11 two-year-old fillies will travel one mile on the lawn in Sunday’s $100,000 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf. The wide-open affair features some sharp domestic youngsters and a pair importing from Europe in what surely looks to be a fun betting opportunity.

Trainer John Sadler has two in the field and I like both of his entrants. #6 Dendera showed vast improvement in her second lifetime outing when switching to the green last time out. The California-bred daughter of Shaman Ghost tracked a moderate early pace and drew off to a convincing 4 1/4-length romp.

Dendera earned a solid 89 Brisnet Late Pace number for her work, and I like her combination of early pace and turn of foot. The January foal came back to post two solid half-mile drills in the interim, and while the move from state-bred foes to open stakes company is a big one, I have confidence that she will give a good account of herself at a square price under John Velazquez.

#2 Dolly May outran her 33-1 odds when winning at first asking at Limerick in Ireland, and will make her stateside bow for new connections. The daughter of Outstrip is a mystery in the field like many are, but I like the fact that she has had time to acclimate to her surroundings with four local drills in advance of Sunday. Juan Hernandez has the assignment.

For the lower rungs of the exotics, #11 Helens Well looks logical despite drawing the widest post. The Kodi Bear filly rallied off of a swift early pace to win going away in her first run in the U. S., and improvement is likely second time in the states. She picks up Flavien Prat, which is always a good thing in California. And the late runner will likely have fast splits for which to rally into once again, too.
