How to bet the 2021 Summertime Oaks

May 29th, 2021

A pair of Grade 2 queens will lead a field of five sophomore fillies postward in Sunday’s $200,000 Summertime Oaks (G2) at Santa Anita.

Summertime Oaks Analysis

The pace will be established by #1 Lady Aces, who breaks from the rail and stretches out in trip, and #4 Soothsay will be tracking her from the break. I envision the early tempo being reasonable from the opening bell.

Summertime Oaks Contenders

#1 LADY ACES -- Daughter of Constitution comes off a fine maiden win sprinting on the oval. Dark bay filly from the Eurton shedrow didn’t come home especially fast in her victory, and while bred for the trip, she is no sure thing going a route of ground at this level through this stage of her development. Rispoli picks up the mount on the stakes debuter.

#2 CRAZY BEAUTIFUL -- Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) heroine has been first or second in six of eight lifetime outings, but she exits an unplaced effort in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) most recently. McPeek pupil comes in with some strong recent morning drills, however, and the aggressive move to ship west is viewed as a positive from this corner. Mike Smith will take the reins atop the top-two threat.

#3 PLUM SEXY -- O’Neill trainee is winless following a debut win in October, and the filly has never run on the dirt before, either. Munnings filly makes her second run with blinkers on, but she will need huge improvement to challenge late in this affair. Others have more appeal.

#4 SOOTHSAY -- Mandella charge is two-for-two in her career, led by a game win in the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) last time out. Top pick and one to beat proved more than capable of handling two turns in her latest endeavor, and in a field with little pace signed on, the bay figures to get a dream trip while forcing the action from second to the top of the lane. Flavien Prat will guide the budding star.

#5 ABSOLUTE SCENES -- Daughter of Dawn Approach makes her dirt debut in the graded ranks and will need a giant form reversal following three seventh-place finishes since arriving in the U. S. The dark bay filly may evolve into a nice one with more seasoning, but she looks out of place on this occasion.
