How to bet the 2022 Dominion Day Stakes

June 30th, 2022

Conditioner Mark Casse has a trio of horses entered for Friday’s $150,000 Dominion Day S. (G3) over the Woodbine main strip. The nine-furlong affair over the All-Weather features a well-matched cast in what appears to be a good betting endeavor to me.

Of the Casse three I am most fascinated with #1 Talbeyah (10-1). Purchased for $350,800 at Tattersalls in the winter, the four-year-old left quite an impression when dominating allowance foes on the surface while making her North American debut. The bay was last early on behind a dawdling pace in that tilt, but she still showed a dynamic turn of foot to win in going-away fashion while passing the eye test as well.

Talbeyah will face the boys on this occasion, and square off with a much deeper field overall, but she posted a pair of fine drills in anticipation of Friday and figures to improve second time off the shelf. The move to 1 1/8 miles will aid the filly, too, as she has run races from 10-12 panels for the majority of her career. Patrick Husbands will retain the mount on the exciting Irish-bred.

#9 Frosted Over (3-1), also from the Casse shedrow, checked in with a fine second-place showing in the Eclipse S. (G2) while making his second run of the season most recently. By Frosted, the bay colt dons a strong 6-3-2-0 mark on the oval which includes a tally in the 2021 Ontario Derby (G3) at nine furlongs. The Kentucky-bred four-year-old draws outside to ensure of a clean voyage throughout, and I loved the way he readily took the lead in the stretch over classic winner #5 Mighty Heart (7-2) in his latest performance.

The versatile win contender has obvious room for improvement in his second appearance dating back to January, and any kind of forward move off his latest will find him holding a slight edge as the field turns for home on Friday. Kaz Kimura will be in the stirrups once again and prompting the tempo from the second position around the back side.
